" 12" DISCOGRAPHY (MAXI-SINGLES & EPs)".

La presente discografia rende necessaria una breve premessa sul suo oggetto. Per Maxi-Singles devono intendersi supporti vinilici a 12 pollici recanti un limitato numero di canzoni (da un minimo di una ad un massimo di quattro con alcune eccezioni) tanto da farli ritenere dei "45 giri" pubblicati sotto forma di "33 giri". In tal senso essi costituiscono l'opposto degli EP, ovvero, "45 giri" che contengono piω delle solite due canzoni.

Questo tipo di classificazione impone pertanto di considerare veri e propri LP quei dischi incisi a 33 giri recanti piω di quattro canzoni, la cui catalogazione puς essere controversa: ad esempio, vanno considerati senza dubbio LP i promozionali di The Wall ("Off the Wall" - USA ed il suo omologo "The Wall in Store" - JAP), cosμ come i dischi promozionali "Pink Floyd in Europe" (che Vernon Fitch inserisce invece tra i 12" inglesi) ed il suo corrispondente "Pink Floyd en Espana".

Vengono invece unanimemente ritenuti 12" il disco di Roger Waters "Selection of The Pros & Cons of Hitch Hiking" (che contiene sei canzoni) e "The Peel Sessions of Syd Barrett" (che ne contiene cinque).

Altro criterio potrebbe essere fondato sul tipo di incisione nel senso di considerare LP tutte le produzioni di dimensione 12 pollici incise a 33 giri e maxi-singles solo quelle a 45 giri; ho pertanto inserito tra i 12" il raro disco giapponese "The Wall D.J. Copy", nella considerazione che entrambe le facciate sono incise a 45 giri: il dibattito θ comunque aperto!

In questa discografia sono stati inseriti 105 dischi per i quali ho avuto sicuri riscontri in ordine alla loro esistenza. La descrizione θ accurata per i dischi appartenenti alla mia collezione (81) mentre per gli altri mi sono limitato ad indicazioni sintetiche.

Ritengo tuttavia che la presente discografia sia quasi del tutto esaustiva e che le edizioni mondiali dei 12" non superino i 110 tipi al massimo.
