A Practical Guide to Hurricane Tracking and Plotting

Brought to you by () - Your source for the best Caribbean vacation you've ever had! - A practical guide to hurricane tracking and plotting Special Hurricane Hunters Features by Martha Watkins Gilkes: (published in 2004, LIAT Islander Magazine) [ required] (published August 2002) [ required] (published June 1996) (both stories courtesy of THE LIAT ISLANDER MAGAZINE - the inflight magazine of LIAT - The Caribbean Airline) Tracking and plotting the coordinates of the current position and its forecast of hurricanes is fun (as long as the eye stays away...)! But sometimes confusing! Those advisories from the National Hurricane Center use all those different units; knots, kilometers, miles, nautical miles, etc
These brave guys fly right into the eye of a hurricane to get the valuable data for hurricane forecasting! It is written by Martha Watkins Gilkes, and was published in the LIAT Islander Inflight Magazine

Current forecasts show modest strengthening and a track toward the northwest -- and out to sea -- after passing by the Cape Verdes, but we'll monitor it closely nonetheless
Other models don't depict the disturbance and its environment well from the outset or show a similar evolution to the GFS.Question is, is there any indication of this feature forming? It's tough to give the eyeball method much sway when looking at how upper patterns are evolving because it's tough to break down the winds (current and forecast) without the assistance of a numerical model, but my eyeball method suggests a firm 'maybe.' There is a weak upper low stationary near 22N/42W, but this is a separate feature

Hurricane Detection, Tracking, and Forecasting
A policy statement of the American Meteorological Society, 1993, covering the
state of hurricane tracking...
Hurricane Detection, Tracking, and Forecasting A policy statement of the American Meteorological Society as adopted by the Executive Committee on 23 April 1993 Contents Our ability to understand and deal effectively with hurricanes is tested annually in the United States and worldwide
As these hurricanes approached our coastline, the importance and need for accurate forecasting of hurricane movement and intensity and for improved emergency preparedness planning and response was made clear to the nation
Hurricane tracking Since tropical cyclones usually form far at sea and spend much of their existence over remote oceanic areas, detection and monitoring of these storms have traditionally posed serious problems to the forecaster
A combination of observing systems is necessary to provide the data required for accurate forecasts and warnings
Despite advancements of remote sensing capabilities from satellites, measurements from reconnaissance aircraft will be required for the foreseeable future to maintain the present level of accuracy for forecasts of landfalling tropical cyclones in the United States
Hurricane track forecasting The environmental flow in which the tropical cyclone is embedded is the main factor determining its track
New tools help forecast tropical storms
[CNN]
SITES: CNN NETWORKS: SITE INFO: WEB SERVICES: New tools help forecast tropical storms A satellite image of Hurricane Bret, taken Aug
EDT (2007 GMT) An arsenal of satellite-based visualization tools developed at the University of Wisconsin at Madison is helping forecasters improve early-warning systems for tropical storms
The tools are giving forecasters a detailed look at the anatomy of typhoons, cyclones and hurricanes, allowing them to break down the components of tropical storms and dissect some of the forces that create, steer and fuel these frequently dangerous weather phenomena
'Each satellite has its own view of theEarth, and we're piecing many of them together for a more complete picture.' CIMSS is working to eventually combine satellite-based data with information from radar and aircraft to produce storm images in three dimensions, which could lead to more accurate forecasts and greater public safety
'We develop these tools in tandem with the forecasters, ' said Velden
'They know what they're looking for from us to aid the forecasting problem.' Wavetrak, one new tool introduced this year, combines data from five different satellites to create a 10-day movie of atmospheric waves circulating out of central Africa, the birthplace of cyclones
Isabel eyes East Coast
[CNN]
(CNN) -- The forecast ferocity of Hurricane Isabel prompted Congress to consider leaving Washington early, spurred the U.S
'If Isabel stays close to our forecast track and if it does make landfall as a major hurricane, it has the potential for large loss of life if we don't take it seriously and prepare, ' National Hurricane Center Director Max Mayfield told CNN
The three-day forecast track shows Isabel's center striking North Carolina's Pamlico Sound -- about 45 miles north of Morehead City and 120 miles east of Raleigh -- at 2 p.m
That was slightly weaker than the system had been over the weekend, but Mayfield warned that the storm was still 'very dangerous.' 'I would expect to see extensive damage to a pretty large section of the country' if the hurricane sticks to the forecast track, Mayfield told CNN
Leadership aides on both sides of the aisle said they would likely work through Wednesday before taking off, but the final call would not be made before Tuesday, when forecasters have a clearer picture of Isabel's path
Although the center of Isabel is forecast to hit North Carolina Thursday afternoon, Mayfield said, the first tropical storm-force winds could show up at the coast late Wednesday
