  • Co-Directors : and () What is Cooperative Learning? Cooperative Learning is a relationship in a group of students that requires positive interdependence (a sense of sink or swim together), individual accountability (each of us has to contribute and learn), interpersonal skills (communication, trust, leadership, decision making, and conflict resolution), face-to-face promotive interaction, and processing (reflecting on how well the team is functioning and how to function even better)

  • What does the Cooperative Learning Center do? The Cooperative Learning Center is a Research and Training Center focusing on how students should interact with each other as they learn and the skills needed to interact effectively

  • Essays on developments pioneered by the Cooperative Learning Center Formal cooperative learning, informal cooperative learning, and cooperative base groups

  • Academic controversy to increase quality of learning and decision controversy to increase quality of decision making

  • Information about the purposes of the Cooperative Learning Center Theory and research Center staff develop and refine theory and (a) cooperative, competitive, and individualistic efforts and (b) conflict resolution

  • ACTIVE AND COOPERATIVE LEARNING In the traditional approach to college teaching, most class time is spent with the professor lecturing and the students watching and listening

  • Such teacher-centered instructional methods have repeatedly been found inferior to instruction that involves active learning , in which students solve problems, answer questions, formulate questions of their own, discuss, explain, debate, or brainstorm during class, and cooperative learning , in which students work in teams on problems and projects under conditions that assure both positive interdependence and individual accountability

Problem-Based Learning, Especially In The Context of Large Classes
Download the full text of one author's writings on the subject.

  • Problem-based Learning, especially in the context of large classes TOPICS Problem-based Learning : PBL is any learning environment in which the problem drives the learning

  • Some example problem-based learning environments include: •research projects •engineering design projects that are more than a synthesis of previously learned knowledge The traditional and well-known "Case approach", popular with business schools, may or may not be problem-based learning

  • Often the case is used to integrate previously-learned knowledge and hence would not be, according to this definition, problem-based learning

  • • What's the big deal about PBL? Posing the problem before learning tends to motivate students

  • They know why they are learning the new knowledge

  • Learning in the context of the need-to-solve-a-problem also tends to store the knowledge in memory patterns that facilitate later recall for solving problems

  • PBL offers an opportunity to develop the skills • Is PBL an example of cooperative learning? It depends

  • • Why does there seem to be so much confusion about what is and what is not PBL? Problem-based learning, learning because you need to solve a problem, has been around for centuries

    Active Learning and Library Instruction
Details how active learning (cooperative learning) can be used to enhance library
    instruction.

  • Site Links Active Learning and Library Instruction by Michael Lorenzen (This article was original published in Illinois Libraries, 83, no

  • In 1886, Davis wrote about his frustrations in teaching students about the library who were not learning anything from his lectures

  • After all, if lecturing to students about library use does not work, why do it? Active learning, also known as cooperative learning, is a model of instruction that many academic librarians have turned towards to better help students learn about the library in the classroom

  • What is active learning? Active learning is a method of educating students that allows them to participate in class

  • Active learning can encompass a variety of techniques that include small group discussion, role playing, hands-on projects, and teacher driven questioning

  • Some of the pioneers in the push for active learning in the last several decades are David Johnson, Roger Johnson, and Karl Smith

  • Many academic librarians (including the author) have heard them speak and they are widely cited in library literature dealing with active learning

  • The three have argued for active learning because they feel lecturing is over relied on by faculty even though lecturing has several limitations

    Constructivist Learning Design Paper
Describes the constructivist approach to "designing for learning" rather than
    planning for teaching....

  • Constructivist Learning Design by George W

  • and Michelle Collay This paper represents a collaborative effort of two teacher educators to articulate a constructivist approach to 'designing for learning' rather than planning for teaching

  • We believe this focus on learning is needed if teachers are to implement a constructive approach to thinking about day-to-day learning by the students

  • If learning is teacher directed, then the focus of the lesson plan is on what the teacher does

  • When designing a learning experience for students, teachers focus on what students will do

  • Teachers and teacher educators make different meanings of constructivist learning theory

  • At a recent retreat with facilitators of learning communities for teachers who were studying in a Masters of Education program, we were talking about our common reading of The Case for Constructivist Classrooms (Brooks & Brooks, 1993)

  • The following interpretation of constructivist learning reflects our understanding of and beliefs about constructivism

  • Constructivist Learning Constructivist learning has emerged as a prominent approach to teaching during this past decade

  •           Abstract Does collaboration on a test, independent of prior collaborative learning, affect test performance?   In almost all the descriptions, demonstrations, and studies of collaboration testing and academic achievement, the effect of collaborative learning on achievement is conflated with the effect of collaborative testing alone.  The results of this study show that collaborative testing alone has a significant positive association with test performance that varies by the level of cognitive processing  reflected in the test question
