SPLICEDwire: Jodi Benson interview
An interview with Jodi Benson, voice of Ariel, Disney's "Little Mermaid."

  • This is what it's like to be Jodi Benson, the voice of Ariel, Disney's 'Little Mermaid.' But she doesn't seem to mind a bit -- she makes a comfortable living off that half-fish, half-teenybopper

  • Disney is re-releasing 'The Little Mermaid' this weekend, and Benson is on a publicity tour

  • A good Disney soldier (she refers to the studio as 'The Company'), she's even willing to meet late on a Sunday night to talk about her life as a mermaid, even though she has a 5 a.m

  • It would never work as a live action movie in a million years, but under the deft direction of Disney, it's one of the best animated movies ever

  • Based on a Hans Christian Andersen story, Disney's take on the tale of a lovelorn undersea teenager finds her falling in love with a handsome prince (naturally), being chaperoned by a wise-cracking crab and tormented by the fabulously wicked Ursula, an octopus/opera singer who wants to take over the sea

  • When 'Mermaid' was in pre-production, Benson was working on Broadway with Howard Ashman, the movie's producer, which is how she began down the road that lead to being the voice of a Disney legend

Etnyre Galleries :: Swarovski Crystal Society Event
The voices of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Wayne Allwine and Russi Taylor, are guests
at an event hosted by Etnyre Jewelers and Animation Gallery.

  • Wayne Allwine (Mickey Mouse) has been providing the voice of Disney's top animated star since 1977, when he officially took over for his mentor, Jimmy MacDonald

  • In 1966, Allwine opted for a "normal" lifestyle and took a job in the mailroom at The Walt Disney Studios

  • Allwine later added sound effects editing to his list of skills and worked in that capacity on many films and television shows for Disney ( Splash , Three Men and a Baby ) and other studios

  • He earned a second Golden Reel for his work on Disney's The Great Mouse Detective

  • He made his debut on The New Mickey Mouse Club and went on to do Mickey's voice for the Disney theme parks, movies, TV specials and records

  • In the role of Mickey, he had the starring role in two Disney featurettes -- Mickey's Christmas Carol and The Prince and the Pauper

  • He was recently heard in the Disney animated short Runaway Brain (1995)

  • Her other Disney voices include Donald's mischievous nephews -- Huey, Dewey and Louie -- and Webby

  • Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, she had wanted to work for Disney ever since she was a little girl and even had the opportunity to express that dream to Walt Disney in person when she encountered him one day at Disneyland

  • Elder wrote, 'Lohan will have to do a little penance before she's forgiven for Confessions .' That 'penance' came with Mean Girls , her first (and first non-Disney) film

  • Lohan returned to Disney for (2005), the fifth film in the long-dormant series

  • It's nice to be able to do something that I think will be acceptable to the fan base I've accumulated from my Disney movies, but subconsciously they'll see me getting older and maturing.' Fully Loaded did well at the box office, earning more in international release than in the United States

Combustible Celluloid - Jodi Benson interview
Jeffrey M. Anderson reveals that Jodi is a Broadway trained singer and actress,
who never really intended to get into movies, much less into animated movies.

  • Anderson Jodi Benson doesn't look terribly different from Ariel, the character she provides the voice for in Walt Disney's The Little Mermaid

  • I remember 8 years ago when I was an usher at the Sonora Cinema 5, I snuck in to The Little Mermaid dozens of times to hear "Kiss the Girl." It was the most vibrant Disney comedy in years, and it instantly became a treasured classic

  • All of us had stage background, so this was the first time in Disney history for the whole cast to meet each other before the movie actually came out

  • It's an amazing process." "Of course it takes 2 1/2 years, 'cause ours was the last hand-painted, hand-drawn, full length feature for Disney studios

  • After years of mediocre animated musicals for Disney, it was the first to gross over $100 million and achieve almost universal critical acclaim

  • It was the one project that put Disney back on the map as an entertainment powerhouse

  • "It's not like I'm trying to maintain 'the Disney image', it's more for me

Celebrity Voice Actors: The New Sound of Animation
Joe Bevilacqua investigates viewpoints on celebrities as voice actors. [Animation
    World Magazine]

  • Courtesy Walt Disney Company

  • A Need for Publicity Animation producer Fred Seibert ( Oh Yeah! Cartoons! ) explains, "Disney started the recent fixation on celebrities with their re-launch of their feature animation division

  • They properly recognized that you couldn't send an animated character out there to Entertainment Tonight to promote your movie." But voice actor Bob Bergen counters, "If you look at Disney's history, they've always used the celebrities of the day for their cartoons

  • No [other] time in film has there been so much animation being produced." While in the past Disney used an occasional celebrity (Phil Harris in The Jungle Book , Bob Newhart in The Rescuers ), today all their major characters are portrayed by celebrities, leaving those who make a living at voice acting to fight over a handful of supporting roles and crowd scenes

  • Moreover, the trend has spread to television with such shows as Disney's Hercules , an outgrowth of their 1997 animated feature film

  • (One must wonder what "acting ability" Merv Griffin and Wayne Newton bring to the show.) Eric Idle, David Hyde Pierce and Bobcat Goldthwait are three of the 160+ voice actors on Disney's Hercules TV series

    Robert's Jeopardy Adventure
An article about being on the show from a former contestant.

  • Good news for any theme park alumni who want to get on the show -- I credit my Disney training for getting me through this step

  • Just like I was taught in Disney Traditions class and by my Disney attraction trainers long, long ago

  • 'Disney's Animal Kingdom.' I cannot freakin' believe this

  • She reacted to that show the way I reacted to seeing 'Disney's Animal Kingdom' in my practice game

  • I mentioned my time in the hot seat at Who Wants to Be a Millionaire here (the Disney/MGM version, of course) and I was a nervous wreck

Stephanie Sheh reports on a talk by Jodi Benson at the Four Seasons Hotel.

  • This is in stark contrast to the star-studded animated pictures that Disney has produced since

  • It's just unfortunate that he's not here, to be able to enjoy the (re-release).' Toward the end of the two-week run of the film's run, Disney will release the Robin Williams film 'Flubber, ' in which Benson's voice makes an appearance

    Cartoon Voices
By Mark Evanier. [POV Online] An informative overview of the business of voice
acting: its history, how it works and how to get in.

  • The first cartoon voice artist was probably Walt Disney

  • Disney heard him on a radio show in 1934 and quickly signed him to what turned out to be a lifetime gig

  • As a result of Disney features, The Simpsons and a general depression in Screen Actors Guild employment, it is no longer unfashionable for on-camera actors to do cartoon voice work
