Nel 2005 fu creata e distribuita una collezione di 32 brani tra i più famosi e di successo di Michael Jackson
la Raccolta The Essential Michael Jackson mette insieme  la quasi totalità delle canzoni di più successo
della carriera da solista partendo dall'epoca dei Jackson 5 fino alla sua carriera solista fino al 2001.
Questa prima versione è stata stampata sotto una nuova etichetta Epic /Legacy e distribuita dalla Sony Music.


In effetti questa raccolta nasce come risposta anche a coloro i quali non hanno potuto comprare la raccolta
precedente "The Ultimate Collection 2004" decisamente più costosa e dedicata ai fan più accaniti,
quindi rimossi i bonus e le canzoni inedite le restanti tracce "Essenziali" sono quelle che chiunque voglia comprare
le canzoni più note e belle di Mihcael Jackson deve avere.

Esistono 2 versioni  principali una internazionale e una USA che si differenziano solo per alcuni brani.
Esiste anche una rara versione chaimata The essential  Michael Jackson Limited Edition 3.0  uscita solo in Inghilterra
con un terzo Cd bonus con 7 tracce e una copertina con una scala di colore diversa

Nel 2008 è stata invece ristampata sotto etichetta Epic / Sony BMG. una versione di quella internazionale
contenuta in un cofanetto metallico che si apre e contiene i due CD e il libretto originario con le informazioni.
