Infos & Curiosities Adda is the name of the main river who feeds lake of Como 1899: Steamer "Adda", ordered by "Lariana" to N.Odero dock of Sestri (Genova), enters service. The original structure is quite particular, completely wood colour, incorporating the wheelhouse and a small room. But "Lariana"'s not satisfied, and after less than a year rebuilds the structures with a more traditional line, two opemned deck in front and rear of the central hall; the wheelboxes include ticket office and toilette. 25 july 1910: at 3p.m. a terrifying storm shocks Como and the nearbies, causing some deads and injuries. Steamer "Adda", sailing to Cernobbio rocked by the heavy waves is not able to reach the pier, and stops at Villa Pizzo pier. SS "Adda", probably the best of small steamers of the lake, is on service in the first post-war period too. She's named "Batel del lac" (milk boat) 'cause she usually carries milk tanks from Brianza to the first basin; for the crew, she's the "Nave-scuola" (School-ship), 'cause all of the beginning captains start to sail on this unit. Not damage by the second world war, ss "Adda" is lightly rebuilt by "Lariana"; the wheelboxes are remade with a more modern line, and the furnishing is renewed. 1949: a strategic plan of "Lariana" for the fleet renewal include the conversion of "Adda" into motor vessel; the plan is refused by the State. 1952: when "Lariana" is forced to end up its glorious lake service, the still valuable "Adda" is not bought by "Gestione Governativa", which decides to build the new "laghi"series vessels: these are bigger and more powerful than "Adda", but with the same capacity, slower, and with poor furnishments. 1953: after a year of laying up, the small "Adda" is taken to Dervio and demolished. |
