Representative Miller Calls For Investigation into Bush ...
A Congressman requests an investigation to determine whether there is a sweetheart
deal between the Bush Administration and one of the nation’s most frequent ...
Department of Labor and Wal-Mart giving the giant retailer the authority to conduct its own investigations of employee wage and hour complaints, Representative George Miller (D-California) today requested an investigation by the DOLs Inspector General to determine whether the arrangement represents a sweetheart deal between the Bush Administration and one of the nations most frequent violators of labor laws
Under the arrangement, disclosed by The New York Times on Saturday, Wal-Mart will be allowed 15 days to investigate and rectify employee complaints before DOL conducts any investigation
Miller said that such an arrangement could allow the giant employer to cover up evidence of a violation and would discourage aggrieved employees who might fear retribution from the company
Miller said it was unclear whether Wal-Mart was required to notify its employees of the new arrangement
He said it was possible that employees had continued to file complaints with DOL without knowing that those complaints would be forwarded to Wal-Mart headquarters without an investigation
Wal-Marts closeness to Republicans was further demonstrated in May 2004, when Vice President Dick Cheney said, The story of Wal-Mart exemplifies some of the very best qualities in our country hard work, the spirit of enterprise, fair dealing, and integrity. In fact, Wal-Mart has a long history of labor violations, from failing to pay workers for overtime hours, discriminating against women employees, violating child labor laws, and locking workers into stores at night

When Wal-Mart Comes to Town
Inc. Magazine's article about how a small Maine town reacted to Wal-Mart's opening
three stores in the area.
People had been coming to the store for generations and apprising Hichborn of their hardware needs, and there they'd always find employees who knew the inventory
'Each department is run distinctly with two employees responsible for all decisions within it, including purchasing and merchandising, ' says Hichborn
By the company's standard, any employee who works at least 28 hours a week is eligible for benefits -- and thus is considered full-time
Now some of them will have to work on Sundays.' He notes that this puts the squeeze not only on people working for large retailers who can afford to pay their employees time and a half to work on Sundays but also on small retailers like him who are forced to keep pace
Teaching Case Study: Wal Mart or World Mart?
Among the issues examined are its low wages, its impact on communities and censorship.
However, on average, it pays its employees lower wages than most retailers and uses contractors who use sweatshop labor overseas to produce goods that have been labeled "Made in America." Wal-Mart is accused of increasing the need for social services in areas where its stores are leading employers, as many employees qualify for public assistance
In order to minimize operating costs and maintain low prices, Wal-Mart pays relatively low wages and provides minimal benefits to its employees
Employees Wal-Mart is presently the largest private employer, hiring directly for its own needs, in the United States
As of early 2000, there were an estimated 885, 000 Wal-Mart employees in the United States, with another 255, 000 employees internationally

Jury hears opening statements in second phase of Wal-Mart trial
[CNN]
PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) -- Wal-Mart workers were forced to stay late without being paid overtime, sometimes locked inside stores until other workers completed their jobs and then told to pitch in off the clock, an attorney for 134 former employees told a jury considering how much the retail giant should pay in damages
violated federal and state law labor laws by forcing employees at the stores to work unpaid overtime from 1994 to 1999
But a lawyer for Wal-Mart questioned the credibility of the former employees and whether they exaggerated the number of hours they worked
Englund told the jurors they must focus on the individual behavior of each of the 134 former employees to determine damages
'Despite the first trial, there is still a significant amount of evidence to be presented.' Roe said that, among other violations, Wal-Mart asked employees to help with tidying departments after closing; workers were asked to help make sure product labels were lined up properly; and employees had to spend unpaid time working on shelves frequently changed for new products or displays
Roe said many employees who had finished their work days were routinely locked inside stores until other workers had completed their jobs, allowing managers to encourage the waiting employees to pitch in 'off the clock' so that everybody could leave

StarHRG's Starbridge insurance, is offered to employees of over 1, 000 low-wage service and retail employers, including Wal-Mart, Target, Circle K Convenience Stores, and Papa Gino's Pizza
Starbridge insurance typically covers only $1, 000 per year of health care expenses, with 100% of the cost paid by employees
Eastbridge predicts that the growing use of HSAs and other high-deductible health insurance plans offered by employers will lead to more growth for limited benefit and other substandard health insurance products as employees attempt to fill growing gaps in coverage
CDHC means employees get a high-deductible health insurance plan, which sometimes can include a Health Savings Account (HSA)

Not only does this chain mistreat many employees that work for them, it also sells goods made by suppliers that grossly violate the rights of their workers around the world
But there is another indirect subsidy as well: one half of Walmart's 720, 000 employees, or "associates" as the company calls them, qualify for federal assistance under the food stamp program
