The brilliant idea in Chaos, which I mentioned earlier, is in my mind the raison d'etre is to reign terror in the midst of a full and complete riot

Here, players have the opportunity to feel like they are truly part of a huge, frenetic riot, and the feeling is truly intense

Well, to be honest, there is a lot of sound, and it's that of hundreds of people running around like chickens with their heads cut off in a full-fledged riot

[] 1989: 'Greekfest' riots Over the weekend in 1989, Virginia Beach experienced the worst civil disturbance in its history, which resulted in over 500 arrests and citations and millions in property damage, not to mention the damage to the city's pristine reputation, which lingered for years afterward

This apparently random act is generally considered instrumental in emboldening the Greekfest celebrants and leading to the following year’s riots, as the 1988 looters was never challenged by local law enforcement due to their large numbers and racial makeup

Many of the young people became intoxicated and rioted in the streets, breaking windows, looting shops, and vandalizing property

Some people suggest that if the City had worked more closely with college organizers and created more event activities, the students would not have gotten intoxicated and rioted

However, this does not take into account two facts: 1) Beach locals and students alike will testify that most, if not all of the rioters, were not actually college students

2) The year following the 1989 riot, the City became greatly engaged and spent millions of dollars to create a safe and fun Greekfest environment

What I'm going to say here doesn't apply to “Teen Age Riot, ” because “Teen Age Riot” is incredible

Everything I'd read about the wonderful things Sonic Youth do on Daydream Nation —the marriage of Art and Rock, the guitar heroics, the sheer flow of the music—I can hear on “Teen Age Riot.” Part of this is the song’s structure; there's no chorus, or it's all chorus, just endless lines drawled out by Thurston Moore punctuated by that effortless, almost cheerful guitar riff

“Deep” and “significant, ” sure, but it had lost the lightness of touch so crucial to “Teen Age Riot.” For the first time I viscerally understood what “navel gazing” meant, and everyone else seemed to adore it (this is, after all, one of the very few rock records now in the Library of Congress National Recording Registry)

It's almost alchemical, what “Teen Age Riot” does, but the band only manages to turn lead into gold once

While “Teen Age Riot” was both instantly appealing and repeatedly rewarding, the rest of Daydream Nation was instantly bland and impossible to work my way into
