PHONE EXCHANGE

About of PHONE EXCHANGE

The Telephone Exchange Name Project
The historical relationship between North American telephone exchange names and
numbers.

  • These were telephone exchanges, and had exchange names -- PEnnsylvania, SYcamore, KLondike, etc

  • So, one day I got interested in finding a list of the old exchange names

  • It turned out to be very hard to find, but in response to this project Mark Cuccia, a real expert on the subject of exchange names, sent it to me

  • This project is an attempt to assemble information about exchange names from a lot of widely spread original sources

  • Thanks to Doug Douglass for this image NEW! We've finally set up a new place where you can share your memories, discuss the merits, and organize to revive EXchange names

  • Get help picking your new EXchange name, or finding your historical EXchange

  • Exchange names helped foster a sense of place, and community, in the same way that cities do

  • It can also be a resource for people who wish to give their phone number using an exchange name

  • Since I started this project I have been struck by the number of responses we have received from people who have told us that recalling their old exchange names has brought back a lot of good memories -- things that they haven't thought about for years

Designed to quickly bring a novice up to speed. Includes breakdown of ISDN
    functionality and networking.

  • You don't need a modem to exchange data between computers, although you will probably need a cheaper 'terminal adapter' (TA) or ISDN card instead

  • In most countries, the 'trunk' network between telephone exchanges has already been converted to digital technology, for this reason

  • So why isn't everyone using ISDN? Some disadvantages are: ISDN may not be available in your area, because it is expensive to upgrade a telephone exchange to support it

  • Also, it won't work if you live more than about 5 km from your local telephone exchange, which affects around 10% of users, depending on location

  • Primary rate lines are mainly used to connect to a private branch exchange (PBX) in an office or hotel

    Telephone Wiring- Installation/Repair/Guide
Telephone wiring installation and repair guide.

  • Getting Started Before you attempt your own wiring it might help to have a basic understanding of how it actually works! The Basics Your dial tone arrives to your home the same way it normally leaves the nearest telephone exchange, on two wires or one twisted PAIR

  • From the exchange, these cables feed distribution points and large buildings

  • These may work fine if your distance to your telco exchange is fairly close, but customers further away from their exchange may experience trouble

  • Depending upon your line quality and distance to your local telco exchange, you'll probably connect somewhere between 28kbps and 56kbps

  • You must be within 4.5km of your serving telco office and not all telco exchanges have been modified yet

FAQs on Area Codes from FCC
The Federal Communications Commission answers frequently asked questions regarding
    area codes.

  • The first three digits are the area code, the second three digits are the central office or exchange, and the last four digits are the individual telephone line numbers

  • There are 10, 000 possible combinations of these digits within each exchange

  • When a consumer makes a telephone call, the network uses the area code and exchange to determine where to send the call

  • The area code tells the network the geographic area in which the called party lives, and the exchange indicates the particular switch, within that area code, to which the call should be routed

  • This system for routing calls requires numbers to be given out in blocks of 10, 000, because each exchange contains 10, 000 telephone numbers
