Medical information for patients [ | ] Sciatica Sciatica is the term given to pain down the leg, which is caused by irritation of the main nerve into the leg, the sciatic nerve
In sciatica, there is a pain down into the leg, which travels below the knee, and may involve the foot
Sometimes the back pain comes before the sciatica, and sometimes will follow
As with low back pain, there is a group of features (the Red Flags ) which doctors use to highlight the need to act more quickly, because they may suggest a problem which is not as straightforward as simple back pain or sciatica
Anyway, it is probably wise to see your doctor if you develop sciatica
The most common cause of true sciatica is a 'slipped disc'
Sciatica occurs when the herniated disc presses against the nerves which go to make up the sciatic nerve
If you still have sciatica after a few weeks, it is likely that your doctor will arrange for you to have a CT (Computerised Tomography) or MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan
Really the main reason for doing such a scan is to see whether an operation will help to cure the sciatica

Hip Pain in Athletes - April 1, 2000 - American Academy of Family ...
Medical article from the American Family Physician.
Nerves The two nerves most likely to cause pain or numbness around the hip are the sciatic and lateral femoral cutaneous nerves
The sciatic nerve includes motor and sensory components that originate from the L4, L5, S1, S2 and S3 nerve roots
It passes through the sciatic notch, where it is susceptible to compression by the piriformis muscle (Figure 2a)
Sciatic nerve as it passes through the sciatic notch and beneath the piriformis muscle--a site of possible nerve compression
Patients with the piriformis syndrome will have pain with passive internal rotation and palpation of the sciatic notch (Figure 10), as well as with active external rotation
Examiner checking for piriformis syndrome by palpating the sciatic notch during passive internal rotation
When sciatica is not disc disease: detecting piriformis syndrome in active patients
Plantar Fasciitis and Other Causes of Heel Pain - April 15, 1999 ...
Information from the American Family Physician.
These include sciatica, tarsal tunnel syndrome, entrapment of the lateral plantar nerve, rupture of the plantar fascia, calcaneal stress fracture and calcaneal apophysitis (Sever's disease)
Sciatica Heel pain secondary to sciatica is a result of pressure on the L5-S1 nerve root, which provides segmental innervation to the posterior thigh, and the gluteal, anterior, posterior and lateral leg muscles, as well as sensation to the heel
The sciatic nerve innervates numerous muscles along its course, and patients may experience weakness in any or all of them
The neurologic examination should include testing of proprioception, sharp/dull sensation and reflexes (specifically the plantar reflex) to rule out polyneuropathy, sciatica and neuralgia as causes of the heel pain
The treatment of heel pain caused by sciatic root compression should be directed toward the primary pathology

Welcome to Sciatica.org Sciatica -- pain, weakness, numbness, and other discomfort along the path of the sciatic nerve -- often accompanies low back pain, which afflicts every adult from time to time, costing billions of dollars in healthcare and lost days of work
Low back pain and sciatica can baffle physicians and other medical professionals, arising without warning and continuing for long periods of time
Sciatica is a symptom of a problem at some point along the sciatic nerve rather than an ailment in and of itself
A herniated disc in the back, spinal stenosis and piriformis syndrome are medical disorders that can cause sciatica
Individuals who have sciatica are often crippled by it, and are driven to seek relief from conventional medical treatment, alternative therapies, and 'miracle' cures
Our aim is to promote understanding for healthcare professionals and for the general public by providing access to basic scientific and practice information which may help with diagnostic and treatment decisions involving sciatica

About 25% of people who have back pain have a herniated disk, called, because the problem once was believed to stem from pressure on the sciatic nerve
Surgery may be considered for anyone with frequently recurring sciatica, usually if the pain interferes with your ability to work or do daily activities
Doctors usually reserve surgery for chronic sciatica
In general, most medical sources do not recommend considering surgery in acute sciatica
