CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Moral Aspects of Monopoly
According to its etymology, monopoly (monopolia) signifies exclusive sale, or
exclusive privilege of selling. Present usage, however, extends the term to any ...

  • While this rule was substantially correct for the, when the competitive, or rather the customary, price was generally fair to both producers and consumers, it is far from acceptable to-day, when the competitive price is often too low to provide a just return to the agents of production

  • For competitive prices, as well as for monopoly prices, the objective rule of justice is that a thing should be sold at a price sufficiently high to remunerate fairly all who have contributed to the production of the thing; the subjective rule of justice is the social estimate, the price approved by competent and fair-minded men (cf

  • Consequently, competition may be the proper rule of justice for the interest receiver, as well as for the director of industry, although it is not always a just rule for the ordinary wage-earner

  • It would seem that the only exception to this rule would occur when the monopoly, while paying a fair wage to labour and a fair price to those from whom it buys materials, introduces economies of production which enable it to sell its goods at less than the prices charged by its competitors, and yet make unusual profits and interest on its investment

  • Each chain's value is represented by stock, initially offered at $200 to $400 per share, but growing according to a table in the rules book, reaching a high of $1200 per share

  • The two majority shareholders in the defunct chain are given a money bonus (again located in a table in the rule book) ranging from $2000 to $12000 for first place, half of that for second place

  • According to the rules, stock transactions are done publicly, but cash and stock holdings are kept hidden

  • The Avalon Hill version of the game gives each player a 'special power, ' an ability to bend the rules

  • Like many abstract games of skill, this one is pared down to the bone, no extraneaous rules, no strange scoring system, just a well balanced game of equal players vying for the title of richest capitalist

CNN - Robert Bork: Antitrust case strong against Microsoft - April ...
    [CNN]

  • COMMUNITY SITE SOURCES SPECIALS Robert Bork: Antitrust case strong against Microsoft Microsoft consultant Charles Rule and Netscape representative Robert Bork Netscape hires former judge to press its complaints April 26, 1998 Web posted at: 8:39 p.m

  • 'However, they ought not to be able to maintain their monopoly, not by doing a better product but by using these kinds of practices that exclude competition.' Microsoft: Consumers stand to lose But Charles Rule, a Microsoft legal consultant, said any Justice Department antitrust action against Microsoft threatens innovation in the entire computer industry and is bad news for consumers

  • 'You're going to have the government standing over Microsoft's shoulder -- and ultimately, other computer manufacturers -- deciding what products you can get, what features they can put into their operating system, maybe even affecting what prices Microsoft can charge, ' said Rule, also on 'Face The Nation.' 'I've got to wonder why we in America want to take this part of the economy that has worked so wonderfully, has driven economic growth, and essentially put Department of Justice lawyers and economists smack dab in the middle of making decisions consumers ought to be making, ' Rule said

CNN - Legal scholars opine that Microsoft faces 'deep trouble ...
    [CNN]

  • federal judge rules on whether Microsoft used its monopoly status to violate antitrust law, legal scholars believe that the company faces severe repercussions, including the possibility of a court-ordered break-up into separate entities

  • Assuming that Jackson rules that Microsoft violated antitrust law, the only true remedy would be to break up the monopoly, in Hovenkamp's view

  • If there is not a judgment in the end, and if Jackson does not rule on conclusions of law because a settlement is reached before then, some courts have ruled that the offensive collateral estoppel would not apply

  • However, at least one other circuit court has ruled that once established facts cannot be litigated again even if there is not a final judgment

  • While some legal scholars have said they expect a flurry of lawsuits will be filed now that Jackson has ruled Microsoft is a monopoly, Hayter does not expect that will happen

  • MONOPOLY RULE ?

English Civil War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An article on the series of armed conflicts and political machinations which took
place between English Parliamentarians and Royalists from 1642 until 1651.

  • As Charles shared his father's position on the power of the crown (James had described kings as 'little Gods on Earth', chosen by God to rule in accordance with the doctrine of the ''), the suspicions of the Parliamentarians had some justification

  • Although pious and with little personal ambition, Charles demanded outright loyalty in return for 'just rule.' He considered any questioning of his orders as, at best, insulting

  • [] The Personal Rule and the rebellion in Scotland Charles I managed to avoid calling a Parliament for the next decade

  • Depending upon their political affiliation, the English referred to this time either as the 'Eleven Years' Tyranny' or as 'Charles' Personal Rule'

  • Accordingly, his Government pursued peaceful policies at home and abroad, and inititated only minimal new legislative activity — Charles preferring to claim that the legitimacy of his personal rule relied on the continuity of ancient customs

  • Charles took exception to this (offence against the ruler) and dissolved Parliament after only a few days, this earning it the name 'the '

    Big Sister Is Watching You
Whittaker Chambers's review of Atlas Shrugged, published in the National Review 1957.

  • This is one of the best statements on the relationship between the rule of law and the state's monopoly on violence

  • 108-110: If a society provided no organized protection against force, it would compel every citizen to go about armed, to turn his home into a fortress, to shoot any strangers approaching his door&#151 or to join a protective gang of citizens who would fight other gangs, formed for the same purpose, and thus bring about the degeneration of that society into the chaos of gang-rule, i.e., rule by brute force, into perpetual tribal warfare of prehistoric savages

  • The retaliatory use of force requires objective rules of evidence to establish that a crime has been committed and to prove who committed it, as well as objective rules to define punishments and enforcement procedures

  • Men who attempt to prosecute crimes, without such rules, are a lynch mob

  • If a society left the realiatory use of force in the hands of individual citizens, it would degenerate into mob rule, lynch law and an endless serious of bloody private feuds or vendettas

  • If physical force is to be barred from social relationships, men need an institution charged with the task of protecting their rights under an objective code of rules

Where will you let us go today, Microsoft?
A two-part editorial detailing reasons to migrate from Microsoft's products to
Linux. Includes background about Microsoft's negative impact on PC manufacturers.

  • What would be the point of being creative (except the self-satisfaction) if any imbecile could come along and gain the same benefits from your painstaking work as you do? Patent law enforces the common-sense rule that ideas are property, potentially more valuable than real estate

  • Those who find themselves on top of the game will frequently bend or break the rules to stay on top

    Awful Green Things
    Review by Steffan O'Sullivan.

  • In Dragon #40, additional rules called 'Outside the Znutar' appeared

  • A modified version of these additional rules were incorporated into the 1990 and 1994 Steve Jackson Games version

  • There are rules for exiting the Znutar via the ship's boats and trying to get back to the home system, but it's hard to do, and it concedes the victory to the Green Things player automatically

  • This is due to the addition of the 'Outside the Znutar' rules

  • (There is also an optional rule that the communications beamer has two settings: high and low frequency

  • This helps the crew because the beamer is the best weapon in the mix.) Outside the Znutar rules favor the crew considerably - so much so, that victories go from 60% Green Things to about 55% Crew

  • If using these optional rules, the crew get a few new pieces: 2 cargo movers, 8 Jet Suits, and one Ook Soot (a spacesuit for the mascot!)

Open Letter to Rand by Roy Childs
Attempt to convert Rand to anarcho-capitalism.

  • There is a battle shaping up in the world---a battle between the forces of archy---of statism, of political rule and authority---and its only alternative---anarchy, the absence of political rule

  • There are, by your framework, three alternatives in political organization: statism, which is a governmental system wherein the government initiates force to attain its ends; limited government, which holds a monopoly on retaliation but does not initiate the use or threat of physical force; and anarchy, a society wherein there is no government, government being defined by you as 'an institution that holds the exclusive power to enforce certain rules of social conduct in a given geographical area.' You support a limited government, one which does not initiate the use or threat of physical force against others

  • 'The retaliatory use of force requires objective rules of evidence to establish that a crime has been committed and to prove who committed it, as well as objective rules to define punishments and enforcement procedures.' There is indeed a need for such objective rules

  • But look at the problem this way: there is also a need for objective rules in order to produce a ton of steel, an automobile, an acre of wheat

  • follow rule 3, 4 or 5)

  • Building Rules Building is the most intricate part of the game, and there are several variations in exactly what is allowed when creating or capturing builds, and many of the card game books are ambiguous on this point

  • Some people play by more permissive rules, for example: Some players allow a player to trail a card and simultaneously make a build by combining other cards on the table, not including the card played
