In addition, because I couldn't expand my lungs I had frequent respiratory infections and pneumonias
INVISIBLE IN AN IRON LUNG What happened then is a parable on the failings of the medical model to consider the person behind the symptoms
Hill had begun using the iron lung, a device long associated with the polio epidemic of the 1950s
I had a vague memory of seeing an old photograph of an iron lung in a book, but I was totally unprepared for the realities of using one -- or the fear
With little more than a passing acknowledgment that I existed, the resident in charge ordered the nurses to put me into the iron lung and began to quiz his squad on the technical minutiae of my case
There I was in this intensive care unit, fevered, my lungs full of secretions and unable to get enough air
But more terrifying still was the iron lung, and the procedure necessary to be placed inside
Once they were gone for good, we succeeded in getting me from the bed into the lung
Dr. Henry writes about Bulbar and Spinal Polio
From the Lincolnshire post-polio library, an article from Dr Henry about bulbar

The cranial nerves involve smell (olfactory), vision (optic), three cranial nerves control the various muscles that control eyeball movements, the trigeminal nerve and facial nerve which innervate cheeks, tears, gums, and muscles of the face, etc, the auditory nerve which provides hearing, the glossopharyngeal nerve which controls in part swallowing, and functions in the throat, another cranial nerve which controls tongue movement and taste and one that actually sends signals to the heart, intestines, respiratory (lungs) and the accessory nerve that controls upper neck movement
Death from bulbar usually occurred from damage to the cranial nerve sending the signal to breathe to the lungs
An iron lung, invented around 1926 could keep victims alive with negative pressure breathing
Bulbar victims could also die from damage to the swallowing function because a victim could drown in their own secretions unless adequately suctioned or given a tracheostomy to suction secretions before the secretions entered the lungs
It was difficult to have a tracheostomy and still be able to tolerate the air tight collar of an iron lung
Spinal polio could damage the muscles of breathing in the chest wall and thus spinal polio victims could also need the assistance of a ventilator or iron lung

The audience reaction to My Iron Lung was quite terrifying for some - 40, 000 people surging means people fall over
Many were helped over a 'safety barrier' during the crush caused by the freak-out, induced by My Iron Lung

Reason: It's pretty easy to see how people will respond to observable fluctuations in price: I'll turn off my soothing water fountain at 25 cents a kilowatt, but I'll keep my iron lung going at $100 a kilowatt
