DEAD FLOWER

About of DEAD FLOWER

Day Of The Dead
Description of the holiday from the Mexican Consul General in Austin, Texas.

  • By the first of November, the altars at the former homes of the dead will display images of patron saints, photographs of those in the family who have dead, flowers, fruits, ''pan de muerto'' (bread of the dead), sugar skulls, and the favorite foods of the treasured relatives who are now gone

  • The people come silently from their homes, carrying bundles of gladiolas, cempasuchil (the traditional flower of the Day of the Dead), and candles in hand

  • The men, women, and children sweep and wash the graves, then cover them with petals of the flowers they carry

Selecting And Planting Annuals Outdoors, HYG-1223-92
Information on how to select and plant annuals outdoors.

  • Behnke Flowering annuals or bedding plants are favorite among homeowners

  • They are inexpensive and produce an abundance of brightly colored flowers from spring to frost

  • Place plants under the shade of trees and remove dead flowers as needed to prevent decay if planting is delayed

  • Build up of ethylene gas, a product of combustion, can cause leaf drop and flower injury

  • Remove dead flowers and broken branches weekly

General Maintenance of Herbaceous Ornamentals, HYG-1236-98
    Includes information and pictures.

  • It begins from seed, flowers, produces seed, then dies

  • It overwinters, and in the second season produces flowers and seeds and then dies

  • Pay attention to lighting on your property before siting flower beds

  • Sun-loving plants growing in shade will be lanky and flower poorly; shade lovers in sun will probably turn a light green, wilt easily, and exhibit leaf scorch

  • If plants must be relocated during the growing season, cut off all flowers, cut back foliage, and attempt to transplant on a cloudy day

  • Preemergent weed control products (trifluralin, dacthal) are labeled for use around many flowering plants

  • Pinching and Deadheading 'Pinching' is done to promote bushiness and, consequently, more flowering

  • Both perennials and annuals should be deadheaded (dead flower removed) throughout the season

  • Don't deadhead, however, if you wish to dry flowers, save seed, or are wanting seed pod development for drying

  • Leave flowers on most ornamental grasses and on Sedum 'Autumn Joy' for some winter effect

  • Staking Some plants require staking since stems and flowers may flop or fall over in the garden

Day of the Dead, El Dia de Muertos
Explores how the holiday is celebrated in Janitzio.

  • Much like when we go to a graveyard to leave some lovely flowers on a tomb of a relative

  • Markets are filled with the cempasúchil flower; this orange marigold was the flower that the Aztecs used to remember their dead by

  • Through their work and their care, these flowers grow and will finally adorn their ofrendas and their tombs

  • On the eve of El Día de Muertos , the boats are loaded with people that are very busy taking the flowers and essential articles for the celebrations

  • By October 31 st , all the houses and shops, as well as the docks are decorated with cempasuchil flowers and fruits from this region

  • They are decorated with sugar skulls, candles, cempasuchil flowers, and paper mache skeletons

  • They bring with them flowers, bread and fruits in baskets covered with napkins that they embroidered themselves, as well as the copal , incense, that they will burn so that the aroma will help guide the returning souls

  • It is mainly the women and children who silently find the tombs of their relatives, on which they place the lovely embroidered napkins and set candles, the flowers and food that their dead so much enjoyed when alive

  • DEAD FLOWER ?

www.debito.org: "The Japanese Way of Death" JPRI Occasional Paper ...
Insightful example of how procedures and funerals take place.

  • The flowers, which should have taken up a whole wall, were sparse, as was the food (very ordinary obento box dinners)

  • I was unable to attend the second day of otsuya because I had to work, but in my experience it's much like the above with more formality, more flowers, and far more time spent greeting relatives and friends not seen since the last funeral

  • Framing everything above the flowers and the plastic stone wall, colored forest green, was a simulated curved-cornered Oriental roof made of bamboo-colored plastic shingles

  • And, at each end of the flower display stood two Romanesque columns of fluorescent light, masked in peeling paper

  • Everything but the flowers showed their age from constant reuse

  • Buried in the dead center of all the flowers was Taro's coffin, covered with an embroidered cloth, and crowned by a color picture of him, this time in an Alaskan parka

  • Along both sides of the hall, even spilling out into the entranceway, were huge circular mounts of flowers, like upright roulette wheels one sees at fairgrounds

  • My father-in-law said he bought the most expensive wreath he could find-with the canned fruit also arranged in a flower pattern-costing a mere 50, 000 yen

    Rheostatics
ChartAttack's interview with Rheostatics by Ryan Watson.

  • What’s your story about? DK: It’s called the Sniffing Princess and it’s about these two little kids, a prince and a princess, and they have a lot of fun in this forest smelling flowers and eating berries

  • Now all these bees go after them because they’ve sucked up all the sweetness from the flowers

  • Eventually, the girl sniffs the last living flower in the kingdom and she starts to sneeze and all the pollen that she’s taken from all the flowers starts to come back out of her

  • The little boy kisses one of the dead flowers and it comes back to life and between her sneezing and his kissing the dead flowers, everything comes back to life

    Allen Ginsberg : Sunflower Sutra
    Text of the poem.

  • Sunflower Sutra I walked on the banks of the tincan banana dock and sat down under the huge shade of a Southern Pacific locomotive to look at the sunset over the box house hills and cry

    Day of the Dead
A Mexican woman explains the origins of the Day of the Dead. Contains a photograph
of an altar dedicated to the events of September 11 2001.

  • Marigolds, known to us a flor de muerto (flower of the dead) are used to adorn the altar

  • Fruit, water, flowers and scented candles are placed with their favourite food and we pray for those who have died

  • Care must be taken not to blow out the candles as they can only be stubbed out with the flower heads

Boston Globe Online / Table of Contents
Article details Sartre's funeral ceremony and procession, which ran through Paris
    on April 19, 1980.

  • Spontaneous and completely disorganized, Parisians and foreigners of all generations moved along behind and in front of the hearse, which was covered with immense wreaths of flowers provided by Sartre's publisher, Gallimard, the leftwing daily Liberation, which he helped found in 1972, and other groups

  • Onlookers perched on top of monuments to the dead inside Montparnasse Cemetery - where the poet Charles Baudelaire, the sculptor Brancusi and the libertarian socialist Proudhon are buried - watched as mourners filed past for hours, many casting flowers on the grave, after the empty hearse departed

  • There was no apparent traffic control as the cortege moved through the streets of the capital, blocking bewildered weekend motorists, their cars packed with tennis gear, and preventing an impatient bride in a flower- bedecked car from getting to the church on time
