Essay points out how Wills' style influenced rock musicians.

  • Country Music Foundation Press, 1995

  • San Antonio Rose: The Life and Music of Bob Wills by Townshend, Charles R

  • A master at synthesizing styles, Wills brought jazz, hillbilly, boogie, blues, big-band swing, rhumba, mariachi, jitterbug music and more under his ecumenical umbrella

  • He has been called 'the King of Western Swing' and 'the first great amalgamator of American music.' Wills grew up in a part of Texas where diverse cultures and forms of music overlapped

  • His enthusiasm and mastery were such that he assimilated disperate genres into what might best be termed American music

  • (Wills called it 'Texas fiddle music.') 'We're the most versatile band in America, ' Wills forthrightly asserted in 1944

  • Certainly, they forced country music to open up in its acceptance of electric instruments

  • There were personnel changes and musical shifts as Wills struggled to adapt to the changing face of America in the postwar era

  • In 1968, Wills was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame

  • Confined to a wheelchair, he'd reprised his role as bandleader that day with a group of musicians that included former Texas Playboys

Alabama Music Hall of Fame: Jimmie Rodgers
Profile of the "father of country music," with chart listings for his songs.

  • JIMMIE RODGERS 1993 Inductee John Herbert Orr Pioneer Award H is brass plaque in the Country Music Hall of Fame reads, 'Jimmie Rodgers' name stands foremost in the country music field as the man who started it all.' This is a fair assessment

  • The 'Singing Brakeman' and the 'Mississippi Blue Yodeler, ' whose six-year career was cut short by tuberculosis, became the first nationally known star of country music and the direct influence of many later performers from Hank Snow and Ernest Tubb and Hank Williams to Lefty Frizzell and Merle Haggard

  • The years with the trains harmed his health but helped his music

  • In an era when Rodgers' contemporaries were singing only mountain and mountain/folk music, he fused hillbilly country, gospel, jazz, blues, pop, cowboy, and folk; and many of his best songs were his compositions, including 'TB Blues, ' 'Waiting for a Train, ' 'Travelin' Blues, ' 'Train Whistle Blues, ' and his thirteen blue yodels

  • No wonder Jimmie Rodgers is to this day loved by country music fans

  • Following his mother's death in 1904, he and his older brother went to live with their mother's sister, where he first became interested in music

Alabama Music Hall of Fame: Shenandoah
Follows the history of the Alabama band from its formation in 1985.

  • All the members of Shenanoah were working at FAME Studios as musicians or songwriters

  • The group's self-titled album, released in 1987, leaned a little close to the pop-schmaltz they later rebelled against, though they reached the Country Top 30 early in 1988 with 'Stop the Rain.' The following year, Road Not Taken outlined the group's approach to traditional country and became their most successful album; six singles reached the Country Top Ten, led by the number ones 'The Church on Cumberland Road, ' 'Sunday in the South' and 'Two Dozen Roses.' Road Not Taken reached Gold status by 1991, and earned Shenandoah the Favorite Newcomer award from Music City News

  • The band settled the differences by 1992, and returned to country music with a contract from RCA and the number-two hit 'Rock My Baby' in April of that year

  • -- John Bush Shenandoah won the Nashville Network's Viewers' Choice Award, and Cashbox's Country Vocal Group Award in 1989, and in 1991 were named 'Vocal Group of the Year' by the Academy of Country Music

Rockabilly Hall of Fame: The Killer
The singer's visit to the Hall of Fame in 1999 reported by Larry Holden, with a
biography and tributes by other musicians.

  • No artist of his era has had as interesting a catalog of diverse musical styles than Jerry Lee Lewis

  • Country music and hillbilly blues was JLL's biggest influence because it was his role model

  • While the currently in vogue country artists of his era are George Jones and Merle Haggard, JLL has more feeling in his style than any of them and knows more musical genres and artists than the others seem to

  • JLL remains one of the greatest, most under-rated talents in American music

  • The list of unsung heroes in American music, and especially country music, is amazing - and needs to be remedied

  • 'Realizing my music has had an impact on country and rock music for five decades gives me a lot of satisfaction, ' notes Jerry Lee, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986

  • 'I just naturally love making music of all kinds, from country to rock to R&B to gospel

  • It pumps me up to see people enjoying my music.' Jerry Lee is still pumped by a recent performance in Atlanta

  • 'I've learned to respect and appreciate what he has been able to do with his music.' Phoebe, a country singer, is the daughter of Jerry Lee and Myra, the 13-year-old cousin he married in 1957
