John Renbourn/ Folklore JOHN RENBOURN One of the world's foremost fingerstyle guitarists, John Renbourn's unique sound is a fusion of British and Celtic folk music with jazz, country blues, ragtime, classical, Middle Eastern and pre-Renaissance music -- a style often called "folk-baroque." As a teenager, Renbourn played folk and blues guitar in his hometown of Torquay in southwest England
In 1964, after two years studying classical guitar at the George Abbot School in Guildford, a twenty-year-old Renbourn moved to London to break into the Soho folk circuit and to record solo albums for Transatlantic Records
Then John continued as a soloist, recording memorable albums like The Hermit and The Black Balloon, before forming the John Renbourn Group, which integrated Indian tabla with guitar and jazz reeds
Both Wheel of Fortune and the John Renbourn Group's Live in America were nominated for Grammy Awards
John Renbourn and Robin Williamson often tour together, and John has continued an active solo career
A John Renbourn concert takes the listener into a rich musical landscape of warm vocals and witty asides about the history of the songs

Obviously there are many other possibilities: personally I prefer EADEAE (I learned it from the wonderful album 'The Complete Guitarist' by Dave Graham...) and DGDGBE (often used by the great John Renbourn): both of them are particularly useful to render the drone typical of the pipes, by just picking the 'open' low strings

After the show I made it backstage and managed to ferret out John Renbourn, Bert Jansch and Jacqui McShee
Renbourn: Yes
How do you get it together? Renbourn: That depends what we're going to do
Rick: How do the songs come together? Renbourn: When we arrange songs, it's generally worked out in parts
Terry Cox does a lot of session work, what about you? Renbourn: Terry does any sessions that come along
Renbourn: I used to do some, but I really get brought down with them
Rick: And that leaves you with? Renbourn: Things to do on my own
Rick: Did you ever play with Donovan? Renbourn: Bert never played with Donovan
Renbourn: Some of the old ballads are amazingly complicated
Rick: Does that account for the jazz-folk thing you get going? Renbourn: Well, what happens, if we use a traditional tune, what Danny and Terry put down is essentially a jazz slanted thing, particularly with Terry using a drum kit instead of a hand drum
Rick: What about the sitar number? Renbourn: We only use it on one song, with the banjo, from our last album
Renbourn: That song was hardly worked out at all, we did it more or less in the studio
