The history of Kalash

The Kalash People (Residents of Rumboor, Bumburate and Birir ) are living in valleys of the Hindukush, a border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. The "Kalashis" are maintaining most unique and mysterious culture since 2000 BC or more. A legend says they are descendants of Alexander the Great and off springs of one of his General Salik Shah, who was called by the Greek as General Selefuous. Still these people stick to their culture, conventions and traditions but due to various reasons their population and culture are at decline and if immediate remedial actions are not taken, it will be too late to maintain the same culture.


Kalash celebrate three major religious festival

JHOSHI 14th e 15th May
Function is organized to pay thanks to Almighty. They celebrate the arrival of spring season with new hopes and aspirations.

UCHAO 20th August
Kalashis celebrate Uchao to pay homage to Almighty because of grapes and other ripes fruits. They prepare wine, cheese, corns etc. and rejoice Uchao.

CHOIMUS 7th to 22nd December
It is thanks giving function to Almighty for their bumper crops, fruits, animals and store eatable for winter. Winter is full of snow, rain and cold wind. People sacrifice animals in the name of Almighty, rejoice with wine, fruit, ensemble for dancing, and singing and enjoy every event and moment.

It is excessively important to retain unique and mysterious culture of Kalash people as vital heritage of their ancestors. It is equally important keeping in view the number of foreign tourist who visit every year to this far-flung area of Pakistan, student of Anthropology and precious heritage of minorities of Pakistan.
