His relationship with Monet was particularly close at this time, and their paintings of the beauty spot called La Grenouillère done in 1869 (an example by Renoir is in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm) are regarded as the classic early statements of the Impressionist style
Like Monet, Renoir endured much hardship early in his career, but he began to achieve success as a portraitist in the late 1870s and was freed from financial worries after the dealer Paul Durand-Ruel began buying his work regularly in 1881
By this time Renoir had 'travelled as far as Impressionism could take me', and a visit to Italy in 1881-82 inspired him to seek a greater sense of solidarity in his work
In the 1890s Renoir began to suffer from rheumatism, and from 1903 (by which time he was world-famous) he lived in the warmth of the south of France
`Why shouldn't art be pretty?', he said, `There are enough unpleasant things in the world.' He was one of the great worshippers of the female form, and he said `I never think I have finished a nude until I think I could pinch it.' One of his sons was the celebrated film director Jean Renoir (1894-1979), who wrote a lively and touching biography ( Renoir, My Father ) in 1962

Pierre-Auguste Renoir nació en Limoges el 25 de febrero de 1841, siendo el penúltimo de cinco hijos
Su padre era un modesto artesano que, ante las dificultades del sustento, se trasladó con su familia a París en 1845, cuando Renoir tenía cuatro años
Fue allí donde Renoir aprendería a pintar con pinceles flexibles, redondos y afilados, y con colores fluidos
En uno de estos recreos, Renoir descubrió la Fuente de los Inocentes, de Jean Goujon, y con ella, su fascinación por la plástica escultórica

First Movement: Polemic Renoir's films were underestimated when they first came out
The generation that came to the cinema in the '60s and '70s (perhaps the richest and most diverse era in European cinema) recognised Renoir as an ancestor who had already made the kind of films they admired or were setting out to make themselves, and justly hailed them as masterpieces
Critic David Thomson recalls: "The Renoir retrospective at London's National Film Theatre in 1962 amounted to the clearest revelation of the nature of cinema that I have ever had." For Alain Resnais La Règle du jeu (1939) "remains, I think, the single most overwhelming experience I have ever had in the cinema.” He continues: When I first came out of the theatre, I remember, I just had to sit on the edge of the pavement; I sat there for a good five minutes, and then I walked the streets of Paris for a couple of hours
An unfortunate future result of this adulation, coming during the days when film was starting to become academically and intellectually respectable, was that Renoir's films would ultimately become enshrined as "classics, " worthy objects for academic study, rather than sources of vital emotional and intellectual experience
