Subjective Nikkor Lens Evaluations
Reviews from a contributor to the rec.photo newsgroups in chart format.
SUBJECTIVE Lens Evaluations (Mostly Nikkors), v.5m DAVID RUETHER since counter reset June 21, 2005 "SLE(MN)" first appeared in 1996, last modified 5/13/06 Here is a list of all the Nikkor lens optical types made for Nikon SLR bodies (with thanks to Walter Pietsch and Roland Vink for their help in assembling this list), plus some other lenses that fit Nikon bodies and performed well enough to evaluate
Included also are a few lenses I've tried that do not fit Nikon bodies, but which were interesting enough to include
Having used many of the following lenses (often multiple samples), I cannot resist passing on my experience with these lenses in the form of a brief discussion of the general characteristics of Nikkor lens performance by lens groups, a listing of SUBJECTIVE performance quality numbers for the lenses used (with the number of samples of each lens used, and with an indication of the range of sample performance variation encountered), and notes about the characteristics of individual lenses
If you have used some of the lenses evaluated, I hope that you will be able to combine that experience with what is offered here to get a good idea of how other evaluated lenses perform

What Camera Should I Buy?
A guide for beginners on selecting a camera.
A view camera is fundamentally a light-tight box with a slot at one end for a lens and a slot at the other for the film
With a view camera, the lens and film aren't fixed parallel to each other
With a view camera, you shift the lens up and/or the film down
The film is now 'looking up' at the building through the lens, but the film is still parallel to the building exterior so lines don't converge
I measured the camera with the indispensable Zig-Align mirrors (available from zigalign@compuserve.com for about $50) and discovered that the lensboard and film back were not anywhere near parallel
Equipment suggested help support photo.net Nikon FM2 , Nikon 50/1.8 Lens , Canon Rebel 2000 body Canon 50/1.8 AF Lens , Yashica T4 Note this model is discontinued over licensing issues so buy quickly
The 35mm single lens reflex (SLR) is most folks' idea of a serious camera
SLR means that the same lens is used for viewing and taking pictures
A mirror in the body directs the light from the lens up into a prism for viewing, then flips up out of the way just before an exposure is made

Read on for more juicy stuff! Mitch Schlesinger explores the world through the 18-50 f/2.8 EX DC Lens from Sigma - a standard zoom with constant f/2.8 aperture
The D80 will go on sale in September with a body only price of $999 in the US, UKP 699 in the UK or $1299 in the US, UKP 949 in the UK as a kit with the new 18-135 mm DX lens
In conjunction with their announcement of the new D80 digital SLR Nikon has also revealed two new lenses, the first of which is the DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED which is destined to become the D80's kit lens
This new lens features ED glass, Internal Focusing and a Silent Wave Motor, it provides an equivalent field of view of 27 - 202.5 mm on a DX format digital SLR and has a maximum aperture of F3.5 at wide angle and F5.6 at telephoto
The second lens announcement from Nikon is the AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED (a mouthful if there ever was one)
This lens features ED glass, Internal Focusing, a Silent Wave Motor and Vibration Reduction (II), it provides an equivalent field of view of 105 - 450 mm on a DX format digital SLR (such as the new D80) and has a maximum aperture of F4.5 at wide angle and F5.6 at telephoto

Describes the use of this lens. Illustrated with photos showing the difference
in perspective between shifted and unshifted photos of the same subject matter.
Using the 35mm Perspective Control lens by West Front, Ely Cathedral This is why I bought the lens in the first place, to photograph cathedrals in Britain as I toured around on a motorcyle
Nikon FE, 35mm f/2.8PC lens, Kodachrome 64, May 1985 A House on the Home Tour You don't just have to photograph big buildings
Between the early morning or late evening lighting (depending on the side of the street), the exactly right amount of greenery in the trees and the subtle use of the shifted PC lens, people loved these photos
Nikon FE, 35mm f/2.8PC lens, Fujichrome 100, May 1989 This page is all about the Nikon 35mm f/2.8 Perspective Control lens and includes several examples showing what you can do with it
The demonstrations would be valid also for shift lenses for other manufactuers, and Canon, Minolta and Olympus all made (or still make) shift lenses, but I use Nikon stuff, so don't have any experience with those lenses
I owned a Nikkor 35mm f/2.8 Perspective Control lens for about 14 years
I stop in at these churches as I travel around Britain and got the lens to do a decent job of taking their pictures

The original F2 Photomic, Photomic S and Photomic SB Meter heads mate to Nikon's earlier prong type lenses
The later Photomic A and AS finder mate to the AI lenses, but will also meter with NON-AI lenses in stop down mode
While you are at it, buy the new GN lens introduced with the FM3A
If you have both AI and NAI lenses, however, this could be one of your better choices
The FM can mount and meter NON-AI lenses in stop down mode, the FM-2 can not
It is set up for AI lenses, but will use NON-AI lenses in stop down mode
Not a bad choice for NAI lenses
For prong NAI lenses
The first three will also meter NAI lenses in stop down mode, the FM2/n will not
Most mechanical Nikons, except the F2A, F2AS, FM, FM2 and FM2n, were designed to use the older "prong" Non-AI lenses
Yet all will still work the later AI or AIS lenses, providing the lens has the metering prong
If it doesn't, you can either have the prong added, or use the lens with stopped down metering
This means you use the depth of field button to stop down the lens to shooting aperture, and take the meter reading then -- but don't forget to set the metering prong on the camera to the f/5.6 position
