Walter Scott | Walter Scott (1771 - 1832) Walter Scott was born in 1771 in Edinburgh, one of twelve children of a solicitor
His interest in Scottish legends and history began early, when he lived on the Borders with his grandparents
Scotts first major work, Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border, appeared in 1802-03
The debts Scott inherited from his friend James Ballantyne, with whom he had started a publishing business, forced him to become very prolific in order to earn money
Through the 1810s, Scott published many historical novels annonymously, such as Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian, Rob Roy, and Ivanhoe, for which he is probably best remembered
Walter Scott was created a baronet in 1820, and died September 21, 1832, having paid all his debts with the profits from his writing
Famous quotations by Walter Scott: O, what a tangled web we weave, When first we practise to deceive! Each age has deemed the new-born year The fittest time for festal cheer

Much of the latter was romantic in nature and concerned with the traditions of the Scottish-English border
In 1802-3 he published his three volume Ministrelsy of the Scottish Border and in 1805 his first considerable original work The Lay of the last Minstrel
It was only in his mid-40s that he eventually turned to the novel with the publication in 1814 of Waverley, a book which gave its name to a whole series of subsequent works, some of the most successful of which, like Waverley itself dealt with the two Scottish Jacobite rebellions of 1715 and 1745 against the new Hanoverian kings of Great Britain
while others were concerned with earlier historical periods such as the Scottish religious wars and with the history of Edinburgh
Scott was certainly responsible for awakening a new interest in Scottish tradition generally

The success of this novel lies with Scott's skillful blend of historic reality, chivalric romance, and high adventure
Sir Walter Scott is the wisest book writer that I've ever known(besides God)
The English used by Sir Walter Scott is so strong until that encouraged me more to read the book
Posted By at Tue 24 May 2005, 5:07 PM in || Scott's work is without doubt a masterpiece from his time
With all this is mind I would pose this question: Did Scott actually intend to be anti-semitic or did he intend to portray what he believed was an accurate picture of anti-semitism at that time period? I have not investigated Scott's personal feelings on the Jewish culture, so I do not know
Scott was very specific in the development of Guilbert and chose carefully his 'freinds' such as the Prior Aymer who was at best a thief in clerical's clothing
Scott adds such taste and art to the tale that it will leave all who read its beautiful pages entranced forever
It gave me some new vocabulary words to use but other than that, it was hard to understand because SIR Walter Scott skipped around too much from one subject to another

Edgeworth on Sir Walter Scott
Entry from Andrew Monnickendam's website regarding the relationship between these
writers.
EDGEWORTH ON SCOTT In October 1814, Maria Edgeworth wrote a letter to James Ballantyne which was passed on to the author of Waverley
The fact that the letter carried the motto "Aut Scotus, aut Diabolus" (Scott or the Devil) and that Ballantyne's reply concludes with information about Scott's future publication indicates that the pretence of anonymity just didn't matter
Scott and Maria Edgeworth corresponded till 1830 on almost every subject: on literature, on the fate of the poor, on domestic, intimate matters and on the visits each made to the other's country
IV, 120 The next month - August 1823 - was one of the happiest in Scott's life
What is curious is that even though this was a remarkable event in Scott's life, cementing a firm friendship, Lockhart gets the visit over and done with as soon as possible: a paragraph suffices
Even stranger then, is Lockhart's affirmation, made while dealing with Scott's visit to Edgeworthstown, that Vol
She was also kept informed about innovations, like the gas-lighting Scott would have liked to have had up and going for their visit
