RECRUITMENT OF GENERAL PRACTITIONERS (GPs)

The British Government is currently delivering additional resources into the National Health Service (NHS), to provide a dramatic increase in the services it provides in order to fulfil the NHS Plan (2000).

As far as GPs are concerned, the Plan, which intends to provide a health service designed around the patient, will bring about:
  • the recruitment of over 2,000 GPs world-wide;
  • the modernisation of over 3,000 GP premises;
  • the possibility of patients obtaining a GP appointment within 48 hours;
  • the equipment of all GP surgeries with modern IT systems.

As a result of this investment there is a need for additional doctors from the UK and overseas. This provides family doctors working in Italy with the opportunity to work in England in a dynamic and growing primary care service as a General Practitioner (GP – "Medico di Famiglia").

For those doctors interested there are certain criteria that they must meet:
  • they must be European Economic Area (EEA) nationals;
  • they must have their primary medical qualification from an EEA country;
  • they must have a qualification in family medicine or the Acquired Right to practice as a family doctor;
  • they must have recent experience of working in primary care in areas such as "Guardia Medica" or "Medicina Generale";
  • they must be able to speak a very good level of English.

Ambulance in the UK
Those doctors who move to England will be provided with a period of induction, which will include English language training and clinical support as well as assistance with finding accommodation and settling into a new culture. We also offer training in any aspects of General Practice that might differ from the Italian model (e.g. paediatric aspects, etc.). The learning needs of suitable candidates will be assessed and their induction will be tailored for them, in order to make their transition to the NHS as smooth and satisfactory as possible. Once given a taste of British General Practice on a fixed-term contract, the GPs will have the same chances to apply for a permanent position as any other doctor working in the NHS. A typical average salary would be approximately £60,655 (€84,917) per annum.

To apply:

Please send your CV in English in Word format to RomeNHS@fco.gov.uk . We recommend you consult our CV guidelines (DOC, 30 KB) to ensure proper evaluation of your qualifications.

Your CV and application will be assessed; if you meet the above requirements you will be invited to attend an "open house" information seminar in Italy, consisting of a presentation and a question and answer session.

TMP, the NHS’s recruitment agency, will then invite you to a pre-screening event in Italy, where your language and clinical skills will be assessed by a team of British linguists and medics. You will also meet directly representatives of various regional PCTs (Primary Care Trusts) who are seeking to hire GPs in the particular areas in which they operate in England.

If you are assessed as suitable, you will then be invited to the UK for interview.
