POEMS

A poem is a composition, a work of verse, which may be in rhyme or may be in blank verse or a combination of the two. Or it may depend upon having a fixed number of syllables, like the haiku.

In the final analysis what makes a poem different from any other kind of composition is a species of magic, the secret to which lies in the way the words lean upon each other, are linked and interlocked in sense and rhythm, and thus elicit from each other's syllables a kind of tune whose beat and melody varies subtly, and which is different from that of prose- the other harmony.

The Unloved

I am pure loneliness

 I am empty air

    I am a drifting cloud

   I have no form

    I am boundless

     I have no rest

     I am a wave

that will never reach the shore

    I am an empty shell

     cast up on the sand

    I am the young girl

    forgotten in the street

Here are some examples composed by some students in a class of mine, the 3^F of Liceo Scientifico "O.Grassi" in Savona.

Life Sense

Living

is running

looking for something

that doesn't

exist

Life

is here

live it now

it's beautiful

if you live

you love

all

The Sweet Air

The scent of pine-trees

the fragrance of fruit

the green of meadows

things disappeared

unfortunately

for our civilization

A Slight Hope

When darkness goes away

sunrise and daybreak are coming:

a new life may begin

at

the end

of my life

I'll be happy

because I know that

my life was not

a mere

breath

if

I lived

it is because

I had to live

and nature

wanted

that
