Allo scopo di stabilire con maggiore precisione quante di queste meravigliose microcamere sono state prodotte, Vi preghiamo di inviarci una e-mail con il numero di serie e i dettagli elencati sotto degli apparecchi che potrete rilevare. Anche i numeri degli obiettivi 4X e 8X sono i benvenuti. I numeri elencati nella tabella sono stati desunti direttamente dagli apparecchi o da cataloghi di aste, collezioni, etc. Grazie a tutti per la collaborazione.
Questo censimento è stato iniziato nel 1989 raccogliendo i numeri di serie elencati nei cataloghi delle aste e integrando la raccolta con richieste dirette ad amici e frequentatori di mostre di collezionismo fotografico. Internet ha permesso di aumentare il ritmo di raccolta al punto che negli ultimi due anni sono stati raccolti tanti dati quanti nei dieci anni precedenti.
Sulla base dei dati raccolti possiamo fare le seguenti ipotesi sulla numerazione adottata per arrivare a ipotizzare la cifra totale di GaMi prodotte:
- il numero di 6 cifre è composto da un prefisso invariante (la cifra 3) che potrebbe aver designato il prodotto 'fotocamera GaMi', seguito dalle restanti 5 cifre che costituiscono la serializzazione degli esemplari prodotti nelle Officine Galileo di Milano. Gli obiettivi Gami 4X e 8X almeno a quanto risulta dall'analisi, furono numerati in serie senza nessuna assegnazione di una specifica 'famiglia' numerica a ciascun modello.
- La numerazione è stata applicata in serie crescente (numero più basso prodotto prima del numero più alto), come dimostra l'evoluzione dei modelli di GaMi esaminati finora. Qualche incongruenza di percorso (ritorno a massima sensibilità 100 ASA in un numero di serie di oltre 2000 numeri maggiore del primo 200 ASA trovato) può essere spiegata con sostituzione del corpo per danneggiamento? oppure reperimento di parti accantonate da riutilizzare? Queste cose si verificano comunemente in moltissime produzioni di serie.
- Non siamo in grado di stabilire se vi siano stati "salti" volontari di numerazione: nella nostra sequenza si riscontrano alcune lacune che si vanno man mano colmando. Da notare che tutte le 'centurie' (la posizione 'C' nella forma 3XXCDU) meno 2 hanno campioni rappresentativi. E' ovvio che, in mancanza di documenti aziendali, nulla possiamo dire sugli eventuali numeri prima e dopo i due estremi noti, il 338554 e il 342788.
- E' notevole il fatto che già dai primi 4 dati raccolti nell'ormai lontano 1989 l'intervallo tra gli estremi risultava di 4130 numeri, certamente casuale ma interessante! I successivi 97 numeri registrati hanno ampliato l'intervallo di pochissimo fino all'attuale 4235: questo numero è rimasto fermo da 67 registrazioni!
Salvo improbabili sorprese siamo portati a concludere che, nelle ipotesi fatte, il numero delle GaMi prodotte non sia superiore a 5000 unità: questo numero colloca le GaMi in una fascia medio-bassa di rarità, nulla a che vedere con altri 'mostri' da collezione, quali, per restare nella produzione Italiana del dopoguerra, le San Giorgio Parva e Safo, anche se in questi due casi parlare di produzione appare abbastanza improprio (a meno che non si parli di portaerei con 10 e 50 non si allestisce una linea di montaggio, non si costruiscono stampi destinati a durare, non si documenta il prodotto).
VARIANTI: cammin facendo, stimolati da collezionisti più attenti di noi, abbiamo identificato numerose varianti che sono state apportate alla GaMi nel corso degli anni in cui è stata in produzione. Purtroppo abbiamo iniziato un po' tardi a chiedere, quindi la nostra base dati relativa alle varianti è minore rispetto a quella dei numeri di serie, in ogni caso crediamo significativa. Come avrete notato non abbiamo ancora azzardato, in mancanza di dati certi, nessuna data d'inizio e di fine produzione, possiamo citare solo un disinvolto 1953-1965 citato da varie fonti, che a nostro parere include l'anno della presentazione (che non significa distribuzione e commercializzazione) e un periodo di code di vendita di apparecchi a magazzino. Ci ripromettiamo senz'altro di approfondire l'argomento.
Questo è quanto per ora, grazie a tutti, preghiamo di continuare con i vostri contributi.
- PATENT / PATENTED: la scritta incisa PATENT, che di per sé non significa nulla, è stata apposta dall'inizio della produzione, molto probabilmente per comunicare il messaggio "Abbiamo iniziato il processo di brevetto" mettendo in guardia eventuali costruttori che volessero 'ispirarsi' al design originale dell'apparecchio. In Inglese la dicitura si esprime col noto 'Patent Pending'. Dopo circa un migliaio dei nostri numeri appare per la prima volta la scritta PATENTED, il che farebbe supporre il conferimento di uno o più brevetti. Ipotizziamo che considerazioni estetiche, abbiamo impedito l'utilizzo delle superfici libere della GaMi per incidere diciture, numeri e date varie relative ai brevetti e ai loro eventuali aggiornamenti, tipo le care Kodak a soffietto, che in molti modelli riportano dei veri e propri poemi alfanumerici all'interno del dorso.
- ASA massimi: questa variante segue l'evoluzione della disponibilità di caricatori di pellicole più sensibili. L'iniziale scala 6-100 ASA per BN e 10-80 per Colore diventa così, dopo circa 2000 numeri di serie, 12-200 e 20-150. La sensibilità raddoppia!
- Distanze in mtr o ft: la distinzione si rese necessaria quando l'azienda decise di esportare la GaMi nei paesi 'non metrici', segnatamente negli U.S.A., il classico mercato perseguito da tutti i costruttori mondiali per capacità di acquisto. I primi 'feet' riscontrati appaiono (forse non a caso) in coincidenza con la scritta PATENTED dopo circa 2000 numeri di serie.
- Colore del solco sul collare del pulsante di scatto: questa variante è senz'altro la più 'misteriosa', non riusciamo a intuirne il significato. I colori riscontrati (salvo daltonismo di coloro che hanno contribuito alla ricerca..) sono: NERO - GRIGIO - BLU - ROSSO - GIALLO - VERDE e Nessun Colore. La frequenza sui 30 casi censiti non mostra la decisa prevalenza di nessun colore, in testa è il giallo (7), seguito da verde e rosso in ugual misura (6 ciascuno), poi nero (5) e infine i 'sospetti' blu (potrebbe essere un nero bluastro), grigio (color metallo, quindi nessun colore) e Nessun Colore (magari è andato via). Non è stata trovata alcuna correlazione né con numeri di serie, né con metri o feet, e neppure con il colore della custodia, censita in Blu - Verde - Marrone, ma in nessun caso coincidente con il colore del collare. Proseguono gli studi. NOTA DEL 28/10/2002: NEL NUMERO AGGIUNTO OGGI PER LA SECONDA VOLTA UN COLLEZIONISTA HA DESCRITTO IL COLORE DEL SOLCO NELLA PROPRIA GAMI COME 'ROSA': A MENO CHE NON SI TRATTI DI ROSSO SBIADITO POTREBBE ESSERE UN'ULTERIORE VARIANTE.
- Pressa pellicola: questa piastrina è variata molto presto, (tra i primi 500 e 1000 numeri progressivi), da nera liscia lavorata a fresa a lucida increspata ottenuta di stampo. La seconda è sicuramente più liscia della prima e probabilmente garantisce una pressione più uniforme. Anche in questo caso proseguono gli studi.
- Nervatura sul coperchio per facilitare l'apertura: è una delle varianti inserite da minor tempo nelle richieste di identificazione, quindi i dati sono pochi e purtroppo tendono a confondere. Presente in un numero della serie 338XXX, scompare per poi riapparire al 3411XX e sparire definitivamente negli ultimi 1300 circa. Strano ripensamento, da chiarire.
- Rivetto di rinforzo chiusura: solita storia della nervatura, pochi dati, all'inizio non c'è, appare nella serie 341XXX per scomparire e riapparire di nuovo nella 342XXX. Probabile riciclo non cronologico delle meccaniche disponibili.
- La nuova variante suggerita da un amico collezionista (finitura corpo in due tonalità, all'esterno quella tipica semilucida, all'interno, da entrambi i lati, dove sono situati i comandi, finitura satinata opaca) viene confermata da un terzo esemplare, n° di serie 3427XX . La variante aggiunge un ulteriore tocco di eleganza alla GaMi.

Our goal is to accurately determine how many of these wonderful miniature cameras have been manufactured. Please send us an e-mail listing the serial numbers and the other details listed below of all the GaMi cameras that you see. Serial numbers of your 4X and 8X tele lenses would be most welcome too. The numbers listed in the table have been gathered directly from cameras or from auctions catalogues, collections lists, etc. Thank you all for your cooperation!
This census started in 1989 collecting the GaMi serial numbers listed in auction catalogues and integrating them with data supplied by fellows collectors and fetched at camera shows. Internet inception allowed an increased data collection pace to the point that in the last two years we have accumulated as many entries as in the previous ten years.
On the basis of the data collected so far we can put forward our hypothesis on the numbering system adopted by Officine Galileo in order to approximate the total number of manufactured GaMi cameras.
- The 6-digits serial no. is composed by an invariant prefix (3), possibly designating the product 'GaMi camera', followed by the remaining 5 serialized digits to identify the cameras assembled in the Officine Galileo Milano plant. The Gami 4X and 8X lenses, as shown by our records, have been numbered progressively without any specific family assigned to a model.
- Numbering is increasing (lower number earlier than higher number) as shown by the evolution of the GaMi variations inspected to date. A few inconsistencies that have been detected (back to max. 100 ASA in the film speed dial of a body numbered 2000 units higher than the first 200 ASA recorded) can be explained by a damaged camera body replacement? or, set aside parts used at a later time in production? These procedures are quite common in any serial manufacturing.
- We are not able to determine if numbering "jumps" took place: in our sequence there are a few interruptions. Continuing our census will tell us if these intervals can be ascribed to our as yet small database or if for some reason a sequence of numbers was skipped following a manufacturer's decision. It should be noted that all hundreds (digit 'C' in the position 3XXCDU) are represented, with the exception of two. Quite obviously, in lack of any company's document, nothing can be guessed about potential numbers before and after the current known extremes, 338554 and 342788.
- Quite noteworthily, the interval between the extremes among the first 4 serial numbers collected in the year 1989 resulted equal to 4130, possibly accidental, interesting though! The following 97 numbers recorded widened the interval very little to the current 4235: the last 67 records ALL fell within this range!
Sauf unlikely surprises we are convinced that, within the hypothesis, the number of manufactures GaMi cameras is not higher than 5000 units: this quantity puts the GaMi in a medium-low rarity range, nothing to do with other collecting 'monsters', such as, to remain within the Italian production after WWII, San Giorgio Parva and Safo, although in these two cases it seems quite inaccurate to define these cameras as manufacturing items (in general, with numbers like 10 or 50, unless we are talking about carrier ships, an assembly line cannot be set up, no durable tools are made, products are not thoroughly documented).
VARIATIONS: while researching the GaMi data, we have been spurred by more attentive collectors, who identified several variations carried out while in production. Unfortunately we started only recently to ask for more details, therefore our number of recorded variations, although still significant, is smaller than the serial nos list. You may have noticed that in lack of more reliable information, we have not dared to positively declare the alpha and omega of GaMi production. We may quote a somewhat careless 1953-1965 timeframe mentioned by a few sources. In our opinion this span includes the presentation year (which does not mean distribution and sales) and a number of years of stock sales. We intend to go deeper into this issue.

- PATENT / PATENTED: the engraving PATENT, which in itself does not mean anything, appeared from the beginning of the GaMi production, most likely a warning, "We started our patent filing process" directed to potential imitators who could be willing to ape the original design of the camera. In English the same message should be written 'Patent Pending'. After approximately one thousand of our numbers the engraving PATENTED appears for the first time, which fact suggests that one or more patents were finally received. We may conjecture that look considerations prevented Officine Galileo from using the camera's free surfaces for etching the various patent related markings, including dates, numbers or updates, like the inner back of the dear old Kodak folders, often filled with real alphanumeric poems.
- Max. ASA: this variation follows the speed increase of the available film. The initial range 6-100 ASA for BW and 10-80 for Color film becomes, after about 2000 serial numbers, 12-200 and 20-150. Speed doubles!
- Distance scale in mtr or ft: the option became appropriate when the company decided to export the GaMi to 'non metric' countries, chiefly to the U.S.A., the classic market pursued by most manufacturers worlwide due to its purchasing capacity. The first 'feet' recorded show up (perhaps not by coincidence) together with the engraving PATENTED after about 2000 serial numbers.
- Color of the paint in the groove around shutter release collar: this variation is unquestionably the most puzzling, we have not been able to understand the meaning of it. Colors found so far (assuming that our contributors are not suffering from color blindness..) are: BLACK - GRAY - BLUE - RED - YELLOW - GREEN and (no paint). Count on the 30 recorded cases shows no prevalence of any color, yellow (7 cases) is heading by one, followed by green and red (6 each), then black (5) and finally the uncertain blue (it could be a bluish black), a gray (metal color, hence no paint?) and no paint (perhaps removed or gone?). No correlation with serial numbers, neither with meters or feet, nor with the color of the case, found this one in Blue - Green - Light Brown, but never matching the color of the shutter collar. We will keep looking into this. UPDATE 28/10/2002: WITH TODAY'S NEW ENTRY THIS IS THE SECOND TIME A COLLECTOR HAS DEFINED THE COLOR OF THE GROOVE IN HIS GAMI AS 'PINK': IT COULD BE A FADED RED, OR MORE LIKELY ANOTHER VARIATION.
- Film pressure plate: this part changed very soon (between 500 and 1000 of our progression), from black smooth milled to bright plated dimpled stamped. On the second version the film slides better and possibly the pressure is more uniform.
- Ridge on back cover next to focus wheel to help the opening of the camera: this is one of the most recent variations that were identified, therefore data are very few and quite confusing. It appears in 338XXX, then it vanishes to show up again in serial no. 3411XX, and finally it disappears (for good?) in the last 1300 numbers. Strange change, to be clarified.
- Rivet strengthening the cover door closing latch: few data, as for the ridge above, not present at the beginning of the series, it shows up at 341XXX, then it goes and comes back again at 342XXX. Possibly a non-chronological recycle of the available body parts?
- The new identified variation, (body in two-tone finish, the external area as before in the typical shiny finish, and the central area, both sides, where all dials and controls are located, in a 'satin etched' non glossy finish, while in all the previous ones the central area is finished like the external frame) is confirmed by a third occurrence, s/no. 3427XX. This variation increases the already stylish look fo the GaMi.
