Arthropoda, Insecta, Thysanura

Insecta, Thysanura, Machilidae, Machilis sp. - Trogloxene insect frequent in the litter of fresch and humid hardwood forests; it is a subtroglophile in certain geographical situations, like in the Piemontese cavities where usually it lives in the zone of the cave near the entrances like other subtroglophile species that search here dampness and fresh temperature useful for their ecological needs. Like other Arthropods belonging to different systematic groups, they are an important trophic resource for the more specialized cavernicole organisms. The Thysanura are primitive insects, wingless and whit lengthened body that usually live in sheltered places avoiding the direct sunlight; these ecological habits permit them to live in the marginal zones of the hypogean environment. (Size: about 10-12 mm).
