Arthropoda, Insecta, Coleoptera, Cholevidae, Leptodirinae

Insecta, Coleoptera, Cholevidae, Leptodirinae, Dellabeffaella roccai Capra, 1924 - Troglobite insect, that feed organic substances in decomposition (saprophage), like the other rappresentatives of its subfamily. Blind and depigmentated, its maximum size it's about 4 mm. On the piemontese territory it live only in the Pugnetto zone and its typical locality is the cave "Borna Maggiore del Pugnetto" (Greater Pugnetto Cave) (1501 Pi/TO, altitude 810 m above the sea level, Pugnetto, Mezzenile, Lanzo Valley). Sturani tell us about his meeting with this insects in his enchanting book "Caccia grossa tra le erbe" ("Big game hunting among the grass"), citing it as Royerella, genus which it was ascribed at the beginning of the century. The photo above, performed by the author in 1994, has already been published in the "Encyclopaedia Biospeologica" describing the cave-dwelling fauna of the world (Société de Biospéologie - Moulis-Bucarest, 1998, pag. 1089, foto 2). In this photo are visible the thin, dense and short superficial bristles that under particular light angle shots, give golden reflections to the representatives of the Leptodirinae subfamily.

In the laboratory of the Scientific Station of the Bossea Cave, which biological section is led by the author, we recently made a preliminary study on the life cycle of Dellabeffaella roccai and we ascertain that the eggs laid by this Leptodirino are very big (about 1 mm) and voluminous in comparison to the insect size. The larva that born has remarkable size (3÷4 mm - see photo by the side) and has a a reduced developement cycle, another notable adaptation of this troglobite insects.
