Program/history: D560 launched on 01/20/1988, launched on 10/28/1989 and commissioned in January
1992. D561 launched on 11/03/1989, launched in February 1991 and commissioned in December 1992. The cost of
2 units was about 1,500 billion of lire. They were provided for two additional units, but were cancelled in
favour of the horizon project. The two units are designed to provide an adequate air cover to larger units,
as the aircraft carrier, or the escort of convoys. They can also be used as command ships for fleets with
smaller units.
In 2004, he was installed the anti-submarine missile system Milas.
Since 2006 the units are undergoing, in turn with the Mimbelli as first, an update of the combat system and
radar equipment. Initially it was planned, including various upgrades, boarding EMPAR multifunction radar,
Aster missiles and the RAN-40L radar. The intention was to make a MLU to update with many of the characteristics
of horizon destroyers as his time was done with the Audace. Because of lack of funding, however, the upgrade is
lighter than expected but was not made public in detail. The modernisation of 2 De La Penne destroyers and 4
Maestrale frigates, the prime contractor is Horizon SN and held jobs at the arsenal of Taranto, is expected to
cost 217 million euros so divided in several annual budgets as follows:
2004 => 42,7 milions of €
2005 => 50,2 milions of €
2006 => 20,4 milions of €
2007 => 33,1 milions of €
2008 => 42,5 milions of €
2009 => 26,7 milions of €
They will also be the first unit to receive the new version of Teseo, the mk2/A, with capacity for land attack.
The latest report of missile qualification have been carried out by De La Penne on November 19, 2007.
The adoption of new Vulcan ammunition for the 127 mm and David / Dart for the 3 76mm/62 is not confirmed
but could be carried out without any great difficulty..

In 2007/2008 has been the Mid-Life Update
Trivia: Milas has cost 35 million euros. Despite unity of the early nineties, have no vertical
launcher for antiaircraft missiles, which are common in the units of the period.. This is derived from the
fact that the units have been realized with almost a decade of delay because of lack of funds.
The stabilisation system is capable of reducing the width of the roll of 90%. The propulsion system used is
a CODOG associated with variable pitch propellers and a system of insufflating air for abatement the irradiated
noise.
