  • BOOKS ON SPADES John Galt Strichman Excellent strategy guide - clearly written, with many practical examples

  • Steve Fleishman's comprehensive guides to Spades strategy Joe Andrews' classic work on Spades rules and strategy: Contents Spades was invented in the USA in the 1930's and is played quite widely in that country

  • However, since the mid 1990's Spades has become popular internationally because of its easy availablity in on-line card rooms on the Internet

  • Spades is a in which spades are always trumps

  • In Spades, all four players bid a number of tricks

  • Spades may not be led until either some player has played a spade (on the lead of another suit, of course), or the leader has nothing but spades left in hand

  • Playing the first spade is known as "breaking" spades

  • runs a mailing list for information about Spades, Bid Whist and Pinochle clubs and tournaments in the USA

    Card Games: Hearts
Gives rules, information, variations, and links.

  • Hearts is a trick taking game in which the object is to avoid winning tricks containing hearts; the queen of spades is even more to be avoided

  • Each heart is worth one penalty point and the queen of spades is worth 13 penalty points

  • Although it is illegal to lead hearts until they are broken, players are permitted to lead spades

  • In fact it is a normal tactic to lead lower spades to try to drive out the queen

  • Each heart scores one point, and the queen of spades scores 13 points

  • Some play that the Queen of Spades breaks hearts

  • In other words, hearts may be led anytime after the Queen of Spades or any heart has been played

  • If hearts have not been played and a player is on lead holding nothing but hearts and the Queen of Spades, many people allow hearts to be led, instead of forcing the player to lead the Queen of Spades

  • Some players insist that you must play the Queen of Spades as soon as it is safe to do so

  • This could be when you are void in the suit led or to a spade trick when the Ace or King of Spades has already been played

  • After the pass but before the first lead each player may 'turbo-charge' one of the following cards: Ace of Hearts, Queen of Spades, Jack of Diamonds, or Ten of Clubs

  • Spades Bidding - Introduction Making the proper bid in Spades is the key to winning

  • Spades Bidding - A Simple Technique Now, any magical formula for bidding is bound to have it's faults

  • If you are just starting in Spades, stick with this basic formula for awhile, until you are comfortable with the dynamic conditions that can exist with bags, bids, score, and cards played

  • Before we start, here is a short glossary of terms which are used throughout this document: long suit any suit containing 5 or more cards at the start of the hand short suit any suit containing 2 or fewer cards at the start of the hand singleton a suit with exactly one card at the start of the hand void having no cards left in a suit rank the value of a card low cards rank of 2, 3, 4, or 5 in any suit medium-low cards rank of 6, 7, or 8 in any suit medium-high cards rank of 9, 10, or J in any suit high cards rank of Q, K, or A in any suit trick set of 4 cards which are played in each round The technique proposed here assumes two classes of cards: Spades and non-Spades

Alan's Hearts page: Rules, variations, and links for the card game.
    Rules, variations, and strategies.

  • The basic object is to take as few points as possible, vwhere Hearts and the Queen of Spades add points to your score

  • Unlike Spades, there is no trump suit in Hearts

  • Also the Queen of Spades (often called the 'Black Lady') adds 13 points to a player's score

  • However, if a player takes all 13 Hearts and the Queen of Spades, that player has 'Shot the Moon, ' and may either subtract 26 points from her score or add 26 to all opposing players' scores

  • Clubs are always played first, Hearts give points, Spades have the Queen, so Diamonds should have the Jack

  • The Queen of Spades counts 5 points, not 13

  • The Queen of Spades has no special properties at all

  • Playing the Queen of Spades also breaks Hearts

  • If hearts have not been broken and the player with the lead has only the Queen of Spades and Hearts remaining in hand, that player may announce this fact and play any card from their hand

  • Here are some of their suggestions: Misdeals in hearts aren't like those in Spades: where a player can declare a misdeal because of an unplayable hand

  • my Favorite Hand Ever: After the pass, my hand consisted of: King and Queen of Hearts with Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 5, 3, and 2 of Spades

Contract bridge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Presents the history and rules of the game.

  • The denominations are ranked, from lowest to highest, as clubs (♣), diamonds (♦ ), hearts (♥ ), spades (♠), and no trump (NT)

  • For example, suppose West is the dealer and the bidding was: South West North East pass 1♥ pass 1♠ pass 2♦ double 3♠ pass 4♠ pass pass pass Then East and West would be the defenders, South would be the declarer (since South was the first to bid spades), North would be the dummy, and spades would be the trump suit; 10 tricks would be required by declarer (and dummy)

  • Dummy is allowed to prevent declarer from infringing the rules of play but otherwise must not interfere with the play; thus dummy may attempt to prevent declarer from revoking (by asking eg 'No more spades partner?') but must not comment on opponents' actions or make suggestions as to play; even seemingly trivial comments such as 'You won that trick partner' are not permitted

  • In the example above, the declarer must manage to take 10 tricks (the assumed 'book' of 6, plus 4 as bid, with spades as trumps), to make the contract and get a score

  • The game level for no trump is 3 (9 tricks), the game level for hearts or spades ( major suits ) is 4 (10 tricks), and the game level for clubs or diamonds ( minor suits ) is 5 (11 tricks)

Trixter - The Ultimate Card Game!
Known as "Stich Ansagen" in Central Europe, which roughly translates to "Predict
Tricks" or "Call the Trick". Play is from 1 to 13 to 1 card hands and even ...

  • so please, humor me ;-) Besides, the name 'TRIXTER' really paraphrases the spirit of this game rather well! WHY TRIXTER? TRIXTER is closely related to several other already immensely popular card games (besides its sibling games, it is also akin to SPADES), so it is easy to learn, although it takes 'a lifetime to master' ;-) You can play it with a regular set of cards (52 card deck; the cards in each suit rank (from high to low) A K Q J 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2, and also three Jokers ONLY should there be 5 players, in which case the Jokers will act as dummies without value), so there is no need to buy any special card decks

  • TRIXTER contains the same fun and similar elements as the super-popular SPADES, but again with the advantage that players are not dependent on their partners

  • Another advantage over SPADES is that it offers much more flexibility when it comes to choosing trump suits, and plotting strategy for your hand, especially when you get to bid first

  • My real hope with this page is that TRIXTER might attract the attentions of one or more of the big online gaming sites that offer free card games such as Spades, Bridge, Hearts, Pinochle, Schafskopf, and many others already
