USER INTERFACE DESIGN

Guide of USER INTERFACE DESIGN

UI Design Webzine
Articles on interaction designers, book reviews, editorial and interviews.

  • Site v3.0 Site Search Agile Management Favorite Links Syndicate Blog Archive Featured BlogEntry Friday, May 21, 2004 These days, I'm a lot better known for my writing on agile processes and management than for anything I ever tried to do in user interface design

  • So how is this relevant to UI design, usability and interaction? Good question

  • Somewhat surprising some of the web design community actually feel he is adding value

  • This from Design By Fire gives it the thumbs up but suggests that it is time for a makeover at Jakob's own site

  • So they assemble their own fab five with a design eye for the usability guy

  • So, let's take a look at the link colors on this new look uidesign.net site..

  • Featured BlogEntry Tuesday, Apr 13, 2004 It's been a long time since ui design.net was a regular feature of my life

  • I still have an interest in good product design and excellence in user interfaces

  • Further, this paper demonstrates how many would be e-businesses, seduced by the lure of the emerging 'virtual-world' on the web, have ignored 40 years of accumulated wisdom in how to design usable information systems, and have seemingly forgotten that a satisfying 'user experience' is key to the successful implementation of any information system, particularly one in that operates in the public domain

    User Interface Rupture
A paper that examine how the Unified Process takes into account interaction, graphic design and usability. Includes references and related articles.

  • In , this webzine warned that the widespread adoption of RUP may mean the "death of UI design"

  • Why? Constantine and Lockwood write in their 2000 Paper, Structure and Style in Use Cases for User Interface Design, "For requirements engineering, use cases provide a concise medium for modeling user requirements; in the hands of user interface designers, use cases can become a powerful task model for understanding users needs" This on the whole appears to advocate Use Cases and explains their wide adoption

  • If you couple this to the reality that Use Cases are seldom, if ever, written by someone skilled in user interface design or interaction design, then it is easy to see why Use Cases lead to a system specification which is ill-considered from a user experience perspective

  • Simply take the Use Cases as a statement of requirement, extract from them a functional specification as a list of features, then as a separate exercise develop a UI design which meets the functional specification and leads to a superior user experience

  • Remember that Use Cases are a system-centric view of design

  • Is anyone noticing a theme here? The User is never ever considered important in Rational's thinking about design

AskTog: First Principles of Interaction Design
Bruce Tognazzini discusses basic prinicples of usability for both traditional applications and web services.

  • Interaction Design Solutions for the Real World Search WWW Search asktog.com Principles First Principles of Interaction Design Jump to: The following principles are fundamental to the design and implementation of effective interfaces, whether for traditional GUI environments or the web

  • Of late, many web applications have reflected a lack of understanding of many of these principles of interaction design, to their great detriment

  • (There are, in fact, significant differences in their effects, but those differences have no real effect on interaction design.) While tritanopia is far more rare, it nonetheless rules out dependence on yellow-blue differentiation without secondary cues

  • Consistency The following principles, taken together, offer the interaction designer tremendous latitude in the evolution of a product without seriously disrupting those areas of consistency most important to the user

  • The overall "look" of a single application or service--splash screens, design elements

  • The great efficiency breakthroughs in software are to be found in the fundamental architecture of the system, not in the surface design of the interface

Experiences -- A Pattern Language for User Interface Design
Article by Todd Coram and Jim Lee. A pattern language that can be used to generate user centered software designs.

  • Experiences -- A Pattern Language for User Interface Design Todd Coram (tcoram@pobox.com) and Jim Lee (jlee@btg.com) Software design is the act of determining the user's experience with a piece of software

  • The designer's task is to specify completely and unambiguously the user's whole experience

  • -- David Liddle, Bringing Design to Software [Liddle96] [Top] Introduction Here are the beginnings of a pattern language that can be used to generate software designs which are user centered

  • By user centered, we mean software designs that place the user's experience first and foremost

  • It must be designed to heighten the users experience with software systems

  • Our primary focus is on the higher level patterns found in all good user interfaces: Patterns that help us design interfaces that provide the user with positive experiences using well engineered software systems

  • As a designer, realize when users become frustrated with a program, it is because they know what they want to do, but cannot because the program has a ``secret language'' that the user does not understand

  • The computer interface can be an unfamiliar and unnatural thing, but a well designed interface will minimize the gap between a user's goals and the knowledge required to use the interface

  • &— Ellen Isaacs and Alan Walendowski Designing From Both Sides of the Screen: How Designers and Engineers Can Collaborate to Build Cooperative Technology By Ellen Isaacs and Alan Walendowski Written from the perspectives of both a user interface designer and a software engineer, this practical guide shows you how to make technology that cooperates with people

  • It begins by describing a set of design principles that apply to a broad range of technologies &— handheld, wireless, and embedded devices in addition to desktop and Web software

  • These principles are illustrated with many positive and negative examples from existing products, showing how good designs help you flow in your task and don't get in the way

  • Since design principles do not show you how to build cooperative technology, the book goes on to show how these principles are applied in practice during the design and development process

  • By discussing a realistic example, they are able to describe the many subtle tradeoffs that arise between design and engineering goals
