PARTICIPATORY DESIGN

Guide of PARTICIPATORY DESIGN

UNITN - Participatory Design Conference 2006
"Expanding Boundaries in Design" - 2006 Participatory Design Conference. Trento, Italy, 1-5 August 2006.

  • Home Participatory Design Conference 2006 2006 Participatory Design Conference Expanding Boundaries in Design Trento, Italy, August 1-5, 2006 Sponsored by The theme Expanding Boundaries in Design focuses attention on the multiple contexts in which design takes place and on an expanding range of possible design outcomes

  • While participatory design principles and practices are most often applied to the design of technical systems and artefacts, increasingly there is both the need and the opportunity to focus PD approaches on other domains, such as physical environments, organizational practices, and IT-enabled services

  • Likewise, the contexts in which PD is practiced has grown to include teams of globally distributed designers and practitioners; actor networks that span organizational, expertise, cultural and linguistic difference; and activity areas beyond the workplace, such as domestic and leisure

  • Finally, PD has a significant role to play at various stages of design, from initial concept development, to system configuration, to implementation, to integration within the context of use, and ultimately to ongoing design in use

Anglia Polytechnic University, UK. bstract of a paper presented in the ETHICOMP International Conference on the Ethical Issues of Using Information Technology, ...

  • Call for Papers Programme Registration Participatory design, communicative reason and discourse ethics Published in: - Vol 1 Issue 1 Abstract The participatory design of information systems, like all participatory methods, is associated with strong ethical claims; ethical claims which derive their appeal from western democratic institutions

  • This paper is concerned with the examination of one sustained theoretical attempt to articulate the ethical and political basis of participatory design, that of the social action theory of Jurgen Habermas (1984, 1987a, 1990)

  • Habermas' theory of communicative action and its associated ethical stance, discourse ethics, provides a comprehensive and relevant framework within which to discuss the participatory design of information systems

  • Habermas, and the critical tradition of Western Marxism of which he is a representative, has exerted an influence at key points in the participatory design tradition: in the political foundations of the Scandinavian workplace democracy movement )Ehn 1988), in the epistemological underpinnings of computer supported cooperative work (Winograd and Flores 1986), and in the development of design frameworks for office automation (Hirschheim 1985, Lyytinen, Klein and Hirschheim 1991)

Christopher Alexander: An Introduction for Object-Oriented Designers
A review of Christopher Alexander's major texts, interspersed with remarks about the architect's methodological and pragmatic concerns and software design.

  • Christopher Alexander: An Introduction for Object-Oriented Designers SUNY Oswego / NY CASE Center Last Content Change: 11 December 1993 (Reformatted 2 January 1997) Contents Introduction Software developers lament ``If only software engineering could be more like X ...'' , where X is any design-intensive profession with a longer and apparently more successful history than software

  • In part because it is considered as much artistry as engineering, writings about architecture have most extensively explored and argued out the basic underpinnings of design

  • Even within this context, the ideas of the architect Christopher Alexander stand out as penetrating, and bear compelling implications for software design

  • Alexander is increasingly well-known in object-oriented (OO) design circles for his influential work on ``patterns''

  • This paper considers patterns within a broader review of Alexander's prolific writings on design

  • The format is mainly topical, roughly in historical order, interspersed and concluded with remarks about connections to software design

  • Alexander's central premise, driving over thirty years of thoughts, actions, and writings, is that there is something fundamentally wrong with twentieth century architectural design methods and practices

IDC2006 - 5th International Conference for Interaction Design and ...
5th International Conference for Interaction Design and Children. Tampere, Finland. 7-9 June 2006.

  • As this trend continues, it is increasingly important to understand both the needs of children and the nature of technological design for young people

  • With this in mind, the IDC conference focuses on addressing the challenges of interaction design for children

  • To address emerging research and development, IDC 2006 will look for papers, demonstrations, posters that may include at least one of the following broad areas: Emerging technologies for children (e.g., innovative educational simulations, online games, accessible fabrication devices, mobile communications devices, wireless embedded technologies, sensors and actuators, "smart" materials, authoring/programming tools) The impact these technologies can have on children's lives (e.g., in schools, at home, in public spaces) New research methods which give children a voice in the design, development, and evaluation processes (e.g., participatory design methods, usability testing, etc.) This conference builds on the successes and high standards of the previous IDC conferences (IDC 2005 in Boulder, USA, IDC 2004 in Maryland, USA, IDC 2003 in Preston, UK and IDC 2002 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands )

Communication and Design with the Internet
Jonathan Cohen explains the concepts and describes the vision and skills architects and designers need to implement an Internet strategy.

  • For the first time, design professionals have a powerful, low-cost, interactive, communication channel with which to convey the visual and spatial information that is their stock-in-trade

  • This book explains the concepts&—ways that design and building professionals are using the new technologies improve their practice&—and gives readers the vision and skills needed to implement an Internet strategy in their own firms

The Analog Divide: Technology Practices in Public Education
Research article on the digital divide and infrastructure design in Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).

  •             The analog divide is rendered visible by focusing on practices within the material, discursive, and symbolic contexts of public education.  The material environment is comprised of technological artifacts (like computers, books, and desks), spaces (such as classrooms), and infrastructures (such as school facilities and computer networks).  Discursive contexts include individual relations, organizational communications, and policy negotiations.  Symbolic contexts encompass cultural meanings and logics which are associated with artifacts, images, discourses, and processes.  Each of these contexts overlap and interrelate.  One can study the interrelation of these contexts through technology practices which occur across them: technology design, use, and evaluation

  •   This paper will focus on technology design in LAUSD in order to gain a deeper understanding of how design processes shape educational possibilities.  I attend to technology design because this is a neglected area in studies of education and technology.  By contrast, excellent research continues to be done on the instructional side of technologies in education (Bromley & Apple 1998; Healy 1999)

CHI 97: Building Task-Specific Interfaces to High Volume ...
A scholarly paper by Loren G. Terveen, William C. Hill, Brian Amento, David McDonald, and Josh Creter.

  • Therefore, we redesigned the Phoaks architecture as a generic engine for mining, processing and presenting conversational data that can be configured for specific tasks

  • We also evolved a set of tools to aid designers in creating, analyzing, and iterating the system and interface design

  • In the remainder of the paper, we first articulate the principles of the Phoaks approach and discuss how they relate to other research efforts; we then describe the Phoaks URL recommendation interface, illustrating our principles for collaborative filtering interfaces; next we describe the system architecture, motivating its design features in terms of our experience and principles; finally, we discuss general lessons we have learned about interfaces to conversational data from Phoaks users

  • Three design principles distinguish it from other computer-mediated collaborative filtering systems: role specialization , reuse and recontextualization

  • Apropos this desire and the possibilities inherent in the recommendation mining style of collaborative filtering, the Phoaks design strikes a balance between participants' for privacy and desires for connectedness
