Part I: Research Design, Fort Burgwin Archaeology Program, 1996 Season 1 Introduction Over the past three decades a number of field schools and excavation projects have conducted archaeological excavations in the Taos region (Figure 1)
However, the majority of these archaeological excavations have not been guided by explicit research designs outlining the rationales for the excavation and related disturbance of the archaeological contexts at this unique site

The following research design was written in 1995 and was distributed to the field school participants prior to the 1996 field season to explain the scope of present and future work at Pot Creek Pueblo
The research design builds upon earlier research at the site (Wetherington 1968) and extends the topics and concerns expressed in the research design written earlier by Patricia Crown (1990) for work at Pot Creek Pueblo
The research design has been modified below from its original form (primarily through alterations from future tense to past tense) and is included to describe the primary rationales for the work undertaken during the 1996 season
