A new design of bond future
Description of a new bond future that would prevent squeezes and so allow a
contract to better represent its underlyings.
A new design of bond future Julian D
Wiseman Abstract: The current design of bond future resembles an agricultural contract
A better design would prevent squeezes, and thus allow a bond future to better represent its underlyings
But the design of these all these bond futures is somewhat strange: The interest-rate markets exist to allow borrowers to raise funds and investors to purchase assets
For the most part, the instruments that are traded are well designed for their purpose
Their complications exist for a purpose, but at least to this author, do not seem optimally designed for that purpose
(The quotations above and below are taken from chapter 13 of .) This paper describes a better design of futures contract
So instead consider the following design of contract
The new design We work with a 10-year future, with a nominal semi-annual coupon of 6% and a contract size of 100, 000
However, this would not fix all the abuses of the current design
The new design eliminates this incentive by adjusting the amount of each bond that is to be delivered
Conclusion So a contract in this new design would still track the ‘cheapest’ of a set of deliverables, but would do so in a manner that prevented security-specific squeezes, and that did not change a trader’s risk over delivery

Critique of a Shield soap commercial, by Mark Crispin Miller.
Is all this as stupid as it seems at first? Or is there, just beneath the surface of this moronic narrative, some noteworthy design, intended to appeal to (and to worsen) some of the anxieties of modern life? A serious look at this particular trifle might lead us to some strange discoveries
The authors, that is, might have worked by instinct rather than design, and so would have been no more aware of their work's psychosocial import than we ourselves: they just wanted to make the guy look like a wimp, merely for the purposes of domestic comedy

Carson is almost universally acknowledged as the greatest and certainly the most influential graphic designer of the nineties
He is also the creative director and a designer at
These journeys affected him profoundly and the first signs of his talent were shown at a very young age; however, his first actual contact with graphic design was made in 1980 at the University of Arizona on a two week graphics course
Later on in 1983, Carson was working towards a in Sociology when he went to Switzerland, where he attended a three-week workshop in graphic design as part of his degree
In 1983, Carson started to experiment with graphic design and found himself immersed in the artistic and bohemian culture of Southern California
This magazine lasted for three years but, through the pages of Beach Culture, Carson made his first significant impact on the world of graphic design and typography with ideas that were called innovative even by those that were not fond of his work
A stint at How magazine (a trade magazine aimed at designers) followed, and soon Carson launched, a magazine of international standards which had music and lifestyle as its subject

From the hundreds of submissions we receive, there's a few mistakes that we see coming up in web site designs over and over again, until they begin to get under our skin..
Boring! If you can't introduce your work, or your product, on the first screen then you're failing the basic design test, as well as losing a big chunk of user traffic
I can't tell you how many 'web designers' continue to use little HTML numbers and 2x2 pixel squares as their navigation for clicking through pages
These are not designers who have considered the medium
Thoughtful web designers will make big buttons, and large, chunky navigation systems
Print design, down the block, THANK YOU! That's all for DT's Pet Peeves for the moment

adaptive path » 90% of all usability testing is useless
Lane Becker writes, "Rather than a validation done once before completing a
product... internal, qualitative usability testing [should be] done earlier, ...
This is not to say that it doesn&’t have a significant role to play in user experience design
When done right, usability testing will improve your Web site and your development process, but the current culture surrounding Web site usability testing is such that it rarely benefits the design
Good Web design does well with all of these, and it&’s often difficult to tell where each stops and the next begins
Focusing on numbers to the exclusion of other data leaves researchers with nothing more than noticeably dubious statements like, &“Design A is 5% more usable than design B&” (or &“90% of all usability testing is useless&”)
Instead, user research for the Web should delve into the qualitative aspects of design to understand how and why people respond to what has been created, and, more importantly, how to apply that insight to future work
Usability testing for the Web doesn&’t require outside firms that hold themselves separate from the design process
Understanding context means embracing this research as part of the design process
It should be performed with the full participation of the design team, so that everyone can internalize the user&’s perspective
