CROWE METTE A NUDO L'ANIMA

E' venuta a trovarmi quattro volte."

Ho figliocci in America, Canada, Inghilterra, Italia, Nuova Zelanda.

Crowe bares his soul

By THOMAS WHITAKER

RUSSELL CROWE has talked exclusively to The Sun about his deep respect for the late actor Richard Harris and his love for girlfriend Danielle Spencer.

As the Guinness flowed at the wake for Harris, who died last month, Crowe also gave his views on fatherhood, the Bali bombing atrocity and his attack on British TV exec Malcolm Gerrie.

The Oscar-winning tough guy is known for his ferocious hatred of journalists.

But at the wake, held in the plush Goring Hotel in London, the New Zealand bad boy beckoned me over, pulled up a chair and opened up like never before.

In the candid 35-minute interview, Crowe described Harris, who plays Professor Dumbledore in the new Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets, as “a giant”.

Wary of his fiery temper I squeezed into a corner of a sofa, where he fixed me with his trademark icy glare.

But as the conversation turned to Harris — the star of legendary movies such as The Guns Of Navarone, Mutiny On The Bounty, and This Sporting Life — his mood softened.

Crowe, 38, asked me to turn on my tape recorder and even ushered away his two full-time minders so we could speak in private.

He introduced me to Richard’s three “blood” sons — Damian, Jared and Jamie — describing himself as the actor’s fourth son “by my personal luck”. He added: “He was an absolute patriarch.”

Jared, 37, gave an insight to the close bond between Crowe and Harris when he said: “Dad saw himself in Russell — they were cut from the same cloth. And having met him I agree.”

Crowe said Harris was “one of the greatest actors who has ever walked this planet — a giant on the theatre and world stage”.

He told how the couple formed a close friendship on the set of Gladiator, in which Crowe starred and Harris played Emperor Marcus Aurelius, as they shared a mutual love of rugby.

He said: “After the first take of the first section of that film, Richard came over and said, ‘I am going to make one assumption about you, Crowe — I bet you love rugby.’

“He was an actor I loved and he was a hero in his profession. We worked on the film together for only three weeks but stayed friendly afterwards.

This is a man who until the end of his day was still at the forefront and cutting edge of cinema.”

Chain-smoking Crowe said Harris stood out from the other great actors he had worked with because of his amazing professionalism.

He said: “I did a scene with him and I know how hard he works.

“He understands the heart. He has an aesthetic and he has grace — and grace leads to elegance.”

Crowe also gave a rare insight into his love for Danielle, the 32-year-old beauty and former soap star who has stolen his heart, although he was coy about any marriage plans.

Acting commitments keep the couple apart for much of the time and she could not join Crowe at Richard Harris’s wake because she was working in Australia.

And last month they had to be apart while Russell filmed his new movie Master And Commander in Mexico.

But revealing his tender side, the brawny star said: “I find it extremely hard not to be with the one I love when I am working.

“However, I could not be with someone who does not work to the same level of focus and concentration that I work on so I accept it.

“I hadn’t seen Danielle for about three weeks when she came to Mexico to see me when filming. She came to see me four times out there.”

Crowe clearly loves children, hugging any he met at the wake, although he seemed unsure about his potential as a dad.

He said: “I have 13 godchildren and at the very minimum I see them for at least ten days each year, every one of them.
“I have godchildren in America, Canada, England, Italy, New Zealand.

He was robust about criticism levelled at him for refusing to appear in an Australian telethon for victims of the Bali bomb blast in which 191 people — including 103 Australians — lost their lives last month.

He says he decided not to take part because the Red Cross, which was organising the telethon, was taking too much from the proceeds for their own coffers.

He said: “The week before I had done a programme for an Australian charity called Farm Hand, which tries to find the best way of redirecting water from reservoirs to the drought-affected areas of Australia.

“It is important to me as I have a farm with Angus cattle seven hours north of Sydney.

“For that the Red Cross were taking two-and-a-half per cent, which I thought was reasonable.

“For the Bali telethon they were taking ten per cent, with no idea of how the money was being distributed.

“That is what I could not understand — and their answer did not appease me.

“I am a basic person who asks questions and we are talking a lot of money.

“It is for that reason I didn’t do it. Their cut was too big.
“But of course I care about what happened.

“I have done stuff individually which has helped victims but I don’t want to go into what it is.”

Casting himself in the role of peacemaker, Crowe believes the way to prevent atrocities such as the Bali bombing is a greater dialogue between all nations.

He said: “As an English-speaking man I think we all need to concentrate and focus on what we have for our children and our grandchildren.

“People set off bombs in our public places and indiscriminately kill outside the love of God.

The solution should be conversation. Let us all get together and have a chat. Shall we all butt heads and kill each other’s kids? That is just not right.”

Finally, Crowe said he had no regrets about attacking telly executive Malcolm Gerrie this year.

He had pinned Malcolm against a wall and sworn at him after Mr Gerrie cut a poem Crowe had read from the screened version of the award ceremony.

Crowe says he apologised because Malcolm’s son was being bullied as a result.

He said: “I phoned him because I heard his son was being hassled at school.

“I wanted his son to know that his father and I had a professional discussion and regardless of what was in the paper I respected his dad and that to anybody at his school he should just say my father and Russell understand each other.”

As our interview began, I thought I was about to be fed to the lions by the Gladiator star — but by the end we were the best of mates.

As I was about to leave my mobile rang and Crowe asked to speak to my wife, Joanna.

Answering the phone, he said: “Hello love. It’s Russell Crowe here interviewing Thomas Whitaker.

“He has had seven Jack Daniels — he is on the p***. And from the gutter you don’t get a very good reception.”
