	Basinger in Back Surgery Scare - Hollywood star Kim Basinger is recovering from major back surgery. The 48-year-old actress, who is divorced from actor Alec Baldwin, has suffered for many years with a chronic lower back condition. The Oscar-winning actress was wearing a brace when she attended the Emmy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles at the weekend .
	CORRIERE DELLA SERA: A Toronto presentato «8 Mile», storia della riscossa del rapper bianco - DAL NOSTRO INVIATO TORONTO - Per la prima mondiale del film (ancora incompleto) di Curtis Hanson 8 Mile interpretato dal rapper Eminem, il Toronto Film Festival ha scelto il più antico ed elegante teatro della città dell' Ontario, l' Elgin Theatre: d omenica sera c' erano tanti attori, compreso Dustin Hoffman, con i loro figli eccitati. Fuori, ressa da stadio, migliaia di ragazzi. All' uscita, una sola domanda: «E' grande, è bravo, come sono i brani che ha composto per il film?». Silenzio tombale quando le luci si sono spente, ma prima Curtis Hanson, serissimo regista, 57 anni, acclamato per L.A. Confidential e Wonder Boys, ha detto: «Non si tratta della biografia di Eminem, anche se per molti aspetti lo è. Il titolo fa riferimento alla stra da che divide la Detroit ricca da quella più povera, suburbana, percorsa da ribellioni e violenze». Ecco Eminem sullo schermo nei panni di Jimmy «Rabbit» Smith, in un lurido gabinetto. Si guarda allo specchio, mima un' esibizione, sfoglia lerci fogli sui quali ha scritto note e parole. Viene in mente la parabola del primo Stallone che cercava la riscossa come pugile in Rocky. Lo ha detto anche Eminem: «Mi sentivo Rocky nei panni del mio Jimmy». Fuori dalla sporca latrina, lo aspettano i suoi ami ci di colore, sciroccati e violenti. Ma Eminem-Jimmy non ce la fa a esibirsi: si ritira. Terrà il concerto atteso per tutto il film (ambientato nel 1995) alla fine, quando anche la platea più giovane dell' Elgin, a ritmo rap, esploderà in un applauso senza freni. Alla «prima» il protagonista non era presente, ma c' era Brittany Murphy, che nel film impersona la ragazza della quale Jimmy si innamora. In 8 Mile Jimmy appare in tutta la sua vulnerabilità e in tutte le sue contraddizioni, compresa q uella dell' affetto che Eminem dichiara sempre per la figlia Halle Jade di 7 anni. Nel copione è parafrasata da una deliziosa bimbetta che vive nella casa di sua madre, Kim Basinger, bella e segnata nel volto. Il protagonista, ritornando da scorriban de durante le quali con il branco usa le pistole per il tiro a segno, dice alla bimba «sei la sola donna della mia vita». Per tutta la prima parte, 8 Mile mette a fuoco con durezza l' entroterra di lacerazioni razziali ed economiche in cui vive il ca rismatico Jimmy, che lavora in una fabbrica di automobili. Il film lo segue e insegue: quando torna a casa e vede Kim Basinger fare l' amore con uno dei tanti amici. E' molto dark nell' analisi antropologica di Detroit, dei suburbi più anneriti, ma f a vincere al Bingo la madre di Jimmy, con la speranza di un futuro migliore. Ha detto il regista: «Spero che la storia di Jimmy, rapper bianco, rifletta l' anima di un ragazzo e di un artista non solo trasgressivo». Ha aggiunto il produttore Gazer: « Jimmy ha sempre un sogno sullo schermo, anche se sporcato e "contro". Cercare di capirlo forse potrà aiutare a comprendere perché Eminem ha cambiato il sound del rap e ha sedotto una vulnerabile generazione». Giovanna Grassi.
	EMPIRE (8/10) - Last night I had the privilege of attending a 'work-in-progress' screening of 8 Mile, the latest picture from director Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential, Wonderboys) at the Toronto International Film Festival. Other than the lack of credits though, it looked pretty much finished to me. Now normally I wouldn't be reviewing a movie this early, but I stood in line for more than five hours for the chance to get into the theatre, so I think I'm pretty entitled at this point. The film stars Eminem as Jimmy Smith Jr., also known as Rabbit. This name was given to him either by his mother because as a child he had buck teeth and big ears or by his friends who say he's fast and he likes to fuck a lot. Believe whichever story you'd like. They're both pretty funny. The movie tells the story of the fears and doubts that Rabbit, an extremely talented young hip-hop artist must face and overcome in order to take the next step and get out of Detroit, where the fil m is set. Hence the film 's title - referring to the boundary separating the black and white communities in the Motor City. The film, set in 1995, starts with Rabbit at 'The Shelter' where, every weekend, there is a showdown in which hip-hop artists face-off against one another in 45-second matches, trying to outdo their opponent and where the crowd decides who moves on to the next round and ultimately who is the weekend's champion. However, when Rabbit's turn comes, he chokes. From this point, Rabbit's struggles continue, as he must deal not only with the disgrace of having been booed off stage, but also with the shame of having moved back into the trailer park with his mother (Kim Basinger) after he breaks up with his girlfriend, that his mother is dating someone Rabbit doesn't particularly get along with, the pressures he must deal with at work and from his friends, and finally the bad blood with a rival gang of hip-hoppers. All in all, that is a lot to deal with - for anyone. As the movie's tagline reminds us, 'Every moment is another chance', and even though he is strong enough, talented enough, smart enough and has a number of opportunities at his fingertips, Rabbit must deal with the demons within before he can take that chance. On the one hand, one of his friends (who organizes the Showdowns) is encouraging him to compete and gain credibility in order make his way out, and he has another 'friend' who is telling Rabbit that he has connections and can get him studio time to record a demo. Finally, he has the security of a job. This is where we get the great line from the trailer: "You ever wonder at what point you gotta stop livin' up here and start livin' down here". At what point should he give up on his dreams and come down to reality and accept that working in a factory is all he is ever going to do with his life? Now, I don't know much about Eminem or how much of this story is based on the real life of Eminem, so I can't really commentate about it's accurateness, but I wi ll say that this was a p retty damn good movie. From the story, to the performances, to the direction, to the visuals this movie is solid. For his first starring role in a major motion picture, Eminem is brilliant. As a musician making the transformation to the big screen, he fares ten times better than most who make that leap. (Britney Spears in Crossroads comes to mind.) Maybe this was due to the fact that the story may have been grounded so much in reality, but either way I was pretty impressed. In her role as the deadbeat trailer park mom, Basinger was good as were Mekhi Phifer and Brittany Murphy in their respective supporting roles. And for a bunch of people I've never really heard of, the rest of the cast was pretty strong. When speaking of this movie, I read director Curtis Hanson had this to say: "I saw here an opportunity to make a serious movie about the emotional struggles of contemporary adolescents in this country. This captures the angst, insecurity, frustration and anger, sea rch for direction and id entity." If this is what he set out to do, it is safe to say that Hanson succeeded. As far as criticisms are concerned, I have a few. One would be that that I felt that all of the sub-plots weren't adequately concluded. I would have liked to have known more about what happened to Rabbit's mother and younger sister, other than one well-timed stroke of luck. Furthermore, I wasn't really satisfied with the sub-plot involving Rabbit's ex-girlfriend. While the scene where she shows up at the plant where he works was essential, I felt that there was not enough time devoted to her character and the history of their relationship. Finally, although I liked Brittany Murphy in her role as the aspiring model also trying to make her way out of Detroit, I thought her character was too predictable. From the moment she said she was looking for her ticket out of Detroit, I knew exactly what was going to happen. And after everything I thought would happen did happen, I found the rest of her story to be rath er unrealistic. In conclusion, I will highly recommend this movie to everyone. For those of you out there who are concerned that this movie was made a vehicle to promote Eminem - you needn't worry. This movie will not disappoint. And if this was only a 'work-in-progress' screening I can hardly wait for the finished product. I'd definitely wait in line another five hours on opening night.

2 ottobre - IL MESSAGGERO: Palestra e massaggi per Kim Basinger. Tutto pronto per l'arrivo della diva Kim Basinger. L'attrice di "Nove settimane e 1/2", che l'altro ieri ha avuto un piccolo incidente negli Usa che le ha causato uno stiramento alla schiena, dovrebbe atterrare domattina a Roma. Alle 20.30, infatti, è attesa per l'anteprima del suo ultimo film "People i know", con Al Pacino e Tea Leoni e Ryan O' Neal. Alla serata organizzata al cinema Embassy dal produttore Giovanni Di Clemente per la Cdi, sono attesi molti personaggi del mondo dello spettacolo, da Isabella Ferrari a Michele Placido, Elena Sofia Ricci, Ela Weber e tanti altra big dello show-business. Per il suo arrivo a Roma la Basinger ha fatto richieste specifiche. Niente di straordinario rispetto ad altre star hollywoodiane. La bellissina Kim ha chiesto che fossero messe a sua disposizione “solo" palestra, salone di bellezza, massaggi, suite panoramica e possibilmente un giro per i monumenti di Roma. Nel pomeriggio di domani le prime interviste e la sera l'arrivo trionfale ai Parioli, in limousine scura. 

3 ottobre - London Festival to Show 179 Films - LONDON (AP) - This year's London Film Festival is expected to show 179 films from more than 48 countries in what executive director Adrian Wootton says is an "international spread." . The 46th annual festival opens Nov. 6 with "Dirty Pretty Things," director Stephen Frears' look at immigrant London life. It will close on Nov. 21 with Thaddeus O'Sullivan's "The Heart of Me," starring Helena Bonham Carter and Olivia Williams. If the London Film Festival is known for featuring more films than most festivals, it's also significant in not awarding prizes the way so many other similar events do. That's very much intentional, said Wootton, who told The Associated Press Wednesday that it would remain noncompetitive. "The world is drowning in prizes that don't mean anything," he said. American selections include Curtis Hanson's "8 Mile," starring Kim Basinger and Eminem; Shekhar Kapur's "The Four Feathers," co-starring Heath Ledger and Wes Bentley; and "Antwone Fisher," Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington's directorial debut. Festival entries also include Michael Winterbottom's "M1157811," which tells of a young Afghan refugee in London, Roman Polanski's "The Pianist" and Peter Mullan's "The Magdalene Sisters.". A hefty section devoted to new British movies numbers among its entries Scottish director Gillies MacKinnon's "Pure" and "Hoover Street Revival," a documentary from Sophie Fiennes, sister of actors Ralph and Joseph Fiennes. Last year's festival played to more than 110,000 people in London. A pared-down version then toured the country, drawing audiences of another 12,000 to 15,000 or so.

8 ottobre - Una notizia non proprio positiva:

	COMINGSOON: Kim Basinger soffre ancora i postumi da Baldwin - Gli amici di Kim Basinger attribuiscono alle violenze di Alec Baldwin i problemi alla schiena che affliggono l’attrice. La star di L.A. CONFIDENTIAL si è sottoposta in agosto alla rimozione di una vertebra calcificata in fondo alla colonna vertebrale. I problemi della quarantottenne Kim sarebbero stati causati dalle percosse che il violento marito le avrebbe inflitto in una relazione durata nove anni. Baldwin avrebbe anche spesso insultato la moglie in pubblico, umiliandola anche di fronte alle telecamere. La Basinger, che apparirà nell’imminente film con Eminem 8 MILE, ha seriamente rischiato di finire sulla sedia a rotelle, essendosi provocata lo spostamento di una vertebra con i frequenti allenamenti in palestra. Alec ovviamente nega tutto.
	TGCOM: Baldwin violento, Kim in ospedale - Operata alla schiena dopo le percosse - Da 9 settimane e 1/2 con Mickey Rourke all'ultimo People I know con Al Pacino, è una bionda indifesa tra le grinfie di uomini violenti. E siccome anche nella vita privata Kim Basinger ha dovuto fare i conti con l'ira del sesso forte, sarebbe il caso che l'attrice stipulasse un'assicurazione contro il peccato capitale. Secondo lo Star, l'ex marito Alec Baldwin la picchiava talmente tanto, da costringerla a subire di recente un intervento alla colonna vertebrale. Il segreto è stato raccontato dall'attrice stessa, nei giorni scorsi a Roma per la prima del suo film, alle amiche curiose di sapere il perchè dei suoi insistenti problemi alla schiena. La Basinger, che da qualche tempo non era più neppure in grado di tenere in braccio la figlia Ireland, ha confessato di avere da poco subito un intervento chirurgico in seguito alle percosse del marito. Sposati nel 1994, Kim e Alec erano noti per le loro sfuriate in pubblico. Lui andava spesso sopra le righe, ma si credeva che le "inconciliabili differenze" che avevano portato al divorzio nel gennaio 2001, nascondessero violenze psicologiche più che fisiche. Ora invece si scopre che Baldwin era solito alzare le mani, al punto da spedire la mogliettina all'ospedale. Come nel peggiore dei film.

20 ottobre - La rivista VARIETY ha pubblicato una notizia curiosa: PEOPLE I KNOW sarebbe già stato proiettato a bordo di alcune compagnie aeree, prima dell'uscita nazionale in USA. A quanto pare, sarebbe intenzione della Miramax distribuire il film direttamente in video o via cavo, viste le sempre più frequenti critiche al modo in cui è stato dipinto il Sindaco di New York.

In particolare, sono disponibile due versioni della colonna sonora, 1 classica con i brani del film, ed una SPECIAL EDITION (includes Shady Records bonus disk containing SIX extra unreleased tracks from Eminem, Obie Trice, 50 Cent and more).

The 9 1/2 Weeks star, who plays Eminem's mother in the upcoming flick 8 Mile, admits that she couldn't get to grips with the idea of people eyeing her up, which led to her running home and staying there. She says, "When I came to Hollywood, I could wear a bikini, but I was in misery because people were looking at me. So I wore baggy clothes and watched other girls get the big parts and awards. I used to go home and play piano and scream at night to let out my frustrations. And this led to my agoraphobia."
