1) What is the "Enological
Site"?
It is a detailed five-language glossary
on wine terminology. The five languages
are Italian, English, French, German
and Spanish and the aim of this site
is to give practical and useful information
to whoever consults it. It is especially
for translators and interpreters.
It is made up of a series of "files"
into which the enological terminology
is entered. The files give the following
information about the enological term:
the word in Italian, the corresponding
word in English (here we refer only
to the English section of the site),
sound information, the general and specific
fields, its definition, the word used
in context (practical use of the word),
an explicatory note (additional information),
its etymology, any possible synonyms,
and an illustration if there is one.
There will also be a new entry added:
sources.
2) What is the student's role in
the Enological Site?
The compilation of four files for the
enological site is compulsory for all
students who want to complete their
cycle of studies in this faculty. These
must be done in their second language,
in other words if a student is studying
English and French and he/she decides
to do his/her thesis in English, then
he/she must do three enological files
in French and one file in Italian. As
far as English is concerned each student
will be assigned three files to be compiled
in English and one in Italian. Each
student will sign his/her files and
mark the date of compilation and then
insert it on the web site. Then he/she
will be questioned on this work when
discussing his/her thesis and given
a mark.
For students who have passed from the
diploma to the degree the number of
files is two.
3) Who assigns the words to the
students?
For each language there is a teacher
responsible for the enological site
who will assign the words. The teacher
will correct the students' work and
send it back to the students, who must
make the necessary corrections or changes.
The teacher will check the work again
and if he/she approves the code number
will be given and the students must
insert their files into the web site.
The students should prepare a final
version of the files - possibly bound
- to hand into the teacher on the day
of the diploma.
There is a list at the end of this questionnaire
with the names of all the people responsible
for the wine web site.
4) What exactly must the students
do?
Once the students have been assigned
the words they can start their research.
The words will always be assigned in
Italian therefore the first task is
to find an adequate corresponding word
in the foreign language - in this case
English.
There are many instruments available
to students to carry out their research
among which the use of Internet.
These are the entries of the files:
· Italian Entry : the
word that has been assigned.
· English Entry : the
most suitable corresponding word in
English. Sometimes the English entry
is a compound word or a short phrase.
· Subject : the general
field the word belongs to. The coordinator
usually fills in this entry.
· Specific Field : here
more information about the word is given.
Again it is the coordinator that fills
in this entry.
· Sound Information : how
the word is pronounced. The students
need not worry about this entry because
the teachers will see about it.
· Phonetics : phonetic
spelling of the word.
· Part-of-speech : very
simply the grammar function of the word
(noun, verb, adjective, etc.).
· Definition : the definition
of the word is very important because
it must give clear, concise information
about the word and it must also correspond
to the definition of the Italian word.
· The Word in Context :
this is not always easy to find but
again it is very important because it
shows how the word is used or can be
used. I advise students to notice articles,
programmes or anything concerning wine
and wine making because they can certainly
find useful information for this entry.
Just a couple of lines are necessary
here, be concise.
· Explicatory Note : this
concerns additional information, it
expands on the definition and is obviously
longer. More details on the word are
given.
· Etymology : the derivation
of the word. The etymology of a particular
word is its history. Please do not use
abbreviations or symbols because there
is no way a person can check what they
stand for.
· Synonyms : a word or
expression which means the same as the
entry word.
· Abbreviation : this
could mean a formula or an acronym,
or simply a short form of the word or
phrase. Not necessary.
· Illustration : a picture
- sometimes it is not available or it
does not exist!
· Sources : see note below.
· File Number : each word
has a file number which is necessary
so that the word can be inserted into
the web site. When the students have
finished their files and these have
been corrected, they must insert them
using the file number, which will be
given to them when their files have
been approved of.
· Compiler : the name
of the student.
· Organisation : the faculty
or institute he/she belongs to.
· Date of Compilation :
when the work has been completed, corrected
and inserted in the web site.
A new entry will be added as I mentioned
before

It is very important to make a note
of all the books, magazines, dictionaries,
encyclopedias and web sites consulted,
but there is not much space on the data
base, therefore each student will work
out a number system for the bibliography
of each entry and then in the bibliography
he/she will write out the bibliography
in full with the corresponding number.
Example: for the definition
The Oxford English Dictionary was
consulted - I will call it number 1
and put this number at the end of the
definition. For the word in context
a web site was consulted American Vineyard
Foundation http://www. Etc. - I will
call it number 2 and again put it at
the end of the entry. Finally I will
list my bibliography with the corresponding
numbers in the sources entry, following
the "bibliography rules":
for books, dictionaries and encyclopedias
author, title, publisher, year and place
of publication, edition, page/s consulted
(only for books!); for magazines name,
date of issue, number, title of article,
author of article, publisher, year and
place of publication; for web sites
name of the site, address, date on which
it was consulted, page/s.
5) What should the students hand
in to their teachers when they have
finished their work?
The students must hand in a hard copy
of their files and photocopies or print
outs of all the material they have consulted,
possibly marking the extracts they have
copied. They can hand it in directly
to the teacher if this is possible or
mail it. They must also send all their
files by e-mail, possibly in Microsoft
Word, so that the corrections can be
carried out and sent back to them.

TIME TRACKING DOWN THROUGH THE POST
OFFICE OR THE POSTA CELERE SERVICE WHICH
IS VERY BAD!!!
The files cannot be corrected unless
the coordinator has access (hard copy
access) to the sources, and please make
sure there is some kind of reference
to enology, even if your words have
a general meaning.
Once the files have been corrected and
approved the students must insert them
in the enological web site. They must
enter the Acqui University site, click
on to the enological page and insert
the code number. This gives automatic
access to the file that must be compiled.
Each entry must be filled in and then
saved. The teacher will have to check
if everything is alright before the
files start to run definitely on the
site.
THIS MUST ALL BE DONE BEFORE THE DATE
OF DISCUSSION, THAT MEANS THAT THE WORK
MUST BE HANDED IN AT LEAST A MONTH BEFORE,
FILES THAT ARE HANDED IN FROM TWO TO
ONE WEEK BEFORE THE DIPLOMA DATE WILL
NOT BE ACCEPTED EVEN IF THE STUDENT
HAS ALREADY HANDED IN HIS/HER THESIS.
IF AFTER THE SECOND HANDING IN OF THE
FILES THE TEACHER IS NOT SATISFIED WITH
THE RESULT THEY WILL BE CONSIDERED NULL.
So the steps are:
· Hand in or send a hard copy
of the files and material used to the
teacher in charge
· Send in the files by e-mail
as well
· Once the work has been corrected
and approved of, insert the files by
means of the code number into the enological
web site
· Hand in a hard copy with a
copy on floppy disk to the Segreteria
· Prepare a speech on each file
for the discussion, practise your English
and the pronunciation of the wine terms
(which are often difficult!)
6) What if I do not fill in all
the entries?
It is not always possible to fill in
all the entries, therefore there might
be some blanks. The enological web site
is "alive", in other words
it should never be static, the files
will be revised from time to time so
the files can be improved and more information
can be added.
Please remember that there are many
of you and few of us (one person per
language except Prof.ssa Rossi who is
in charge of both Italian and French
files) and so it is not always easy
to give prompt replies, be patient,
but keep contacting us, always remind
us of your presence.
