| home - introduction - the village - the house - how to get here |
THE VILLAGE Santu Lussurgiu is an ideal location for a relaxing holiday in wonderful scenery. It is famous in Sardinia as having one of the best kept old-towns on the island. Built in the hills of the Montiferru region, the village is embraced by an extinct volcanic crater. It is a thirty minute drive from a number of spectacular beaches including S'Archittu, Is Arutas and Mai Moni, all of which will dazzle you with their white sand and a coastline that has the gradation from aquamarine, through dark green to deep blue. The beaches can be very busy in the height of the Summer, but from mid-May to mid-July and September to October they're idyllic. The village benefits from its proximity to the sea, while its position affords a cool evening breeze which helps non-locals get a good nights sleep even in the high season. Out of season the centre of Sardinia probably comes closest to Ireland in terms of atmosphere. The scenery is stunning and the people, if treated with respect, are welcoming and warm. The position of the village and the beautiful countryside that surrounds it, makes it an ideal setting for trekking or cycling holidays. In addition it is a good point of entry for the carnival season from mid January to mid February which is one of the island's best kept secrets. The various masquerades and horse events that take place during this period are essentially pagan in character and can be spectacular and engaging. The atmosphere is very friendly and the wine flows freely. There are two great carnival events in the village of Santu Lussurgiu that take place on consecutive weekends. During 'Cantigos in carrela', the local male voice choir invites a number of other choirs both from Sardinina and mainland Italy, plus a special guest from abroad. Together the 'travel' around the village, in an itinerant night of singing, dancing, and drinking in a wonderfully communal atmosphere. A week later, the whole village comes together for 'Sa Carrela 'e Nanti', a famous three-day horse event which takes place in what used to be its main street. 'Cavalieri' run in pairs, dressed in Carnival costumes and trying to maintain an elegant and composed union whilst going down the dangerously narrow streets at full speed. Locals claim that the only way to watch this race is from the street where the horses run. We recommend a slightly higher and safer place. Children also have their very own horse race called 'Sa Carrela dei Bambini'. All kids are invited to take part, wearing their fancy dress and riding hobby horses at a much more enjoyable speed. Santu Lussurgiu is not recommended for wild night-life or stag parties. Groups, families or couples looking for beautiful beaches, good food and wine, walking (not summer), cycling, horse-riding and an insight into a remarkable island are invited to take a look. Summer nights with a bottle of wine on the terrace take place under a sky which is so deep blue and full of stars as to be a thing of wonder. - Enjoy
