Death Screams - An interview with Atrax Morgue
ESOTERRA # 9 magazine (USA), 2001 |
The
music of Marco Corbelli's Atrax Morgue is a sinister, synthesizer-based
dissonance rich with pulsating tones and throbbing static beats. His
severely distorted electronic voice reverberates through the fore ground
like the spoken word performance of a homicidal maniac. Tracks like
"Hungry for human" and "Sperm on dead faces" from
Woundfucker are jolting forays into the extremes of Noise; the songs
as aurally disturbing as their titles imply. In contrast, much of the
material on DeathShow illustrates a softer, more ambient approach to
the genre, such as the unsettling soundscapes of "Terrortory"
and "Music for dead brains". However, maybe even more deranged
than his music, Corbelli's worldview is darker still. What started out
in 1990 as an Italian fanzine focusing on murder, necrophilia, and the
harsh sounds of power electronics soon became an obsession. Corbelli's
Murders zine only lasted three issues but ended with the creation of
his Atrax Morgue. Influenced by bands such as Whitehouse and Brighter
Death Now, his first recorded 'aberration' was entitled In Search of
Death, released on cassette through his Slaughter Productions imprint.
The label would expand into a catalog of Corbelli's music as well as
a mail-order purveyor of other Noise artists. Now, Corbelli has worked
with other bands he has greatly admired, including Raison D'Ítre,
Inanna, Runes Order, and Bad Sector. In 1993, Slaughter Productions
put out a limited edition CD, Death Odors-- an International compilation
featuring some of Corbelli's favorite Noise and Death-Industrial acts.
Slaughter Productions' catalog has grown to over a hundred releases
on cassette, CD, and vinyl format while the music of Atrax Morgue continues
unabated. Perhaps, there is consolation in the fact that Corbelli confines
his obsession to art and sound, rather than resorting to far more adverse
methods of self-expression. Why
are you fascinated with death, murder, and serial killers? Have
you ever murdered anyone? Why
do you feel so alienated? Have
you collaborated with any other Noise bands? Tell
me about your Murders fanzine. What
equipment do you use? How
do your family and friends feel about your music? Are
you heterosexual or homosexual? What
kind of reaction did you get when you first started performing in Italy? What
is Italian society like? |

Can
you presents yourself: how long have you been involved in music? what
did you listen to at the beginning? I
feel an high connection between sex and death. I feel connections in
every contrasts and extremes: Birth-Death, Black-White, light-darkness, purity-
sleazyness , beauty-uglyness
Do
you wish to SUFFER? Death
obsessed artists (witkin, Nitsch, Baudelaire, Sade) often eroticise death-
do you? Does it interest you to? How
do you create your music where does it come from (nightmare etc
?)
what inspires you in life? What
drives you to doing music? what effect do you want the listener to feel?
how should people listen your music? Is
your music a ritual? an exorcism? a catharsis? do you want to pervert
or depress people? Some
people say this kind of music is morbid and deranged and only for depressive
kind of people. do you agree or not? Others:
this in the end of music/art, its just neurosis. isn't art the neurosis
of the world anyway? Do
you enjoy violence? How? Are
you fond of sexual crimes? why? Does
all the degradation + violence + decay in the world inspire you? Have
you visited morgues? how was it? do you like the smell of death? could
you accomplish necrophilia? does the presence of cadavers in the place
recomfort you or make you feel uneasy? Do
you like just seeing (enjoying the site of) a cadaver? Death
is the major issue of religions: are you religious? what do you think
of the neo-pagans in industrial/ritual music that fallow organized groups
(for instance satanists)? are you one? what do you think of satanism
& Anton La Vey (some say he is a totally ridiculous, others a great
man
) Have
you ever been involved in death-magik rituals? are you attracted or
repulsed by the idea of a human sacrifice (young white virgin
) could
you eventually accomplish one to evacuate your obsessions? What
do you think of other grangs that evolve in the same area - the so-called
"death-industrial scene"? is there such a scene who do you
appreciate? A
big part of the heavy electronics underground scene in germany/belgium
(loki foundation
) is overtly "national -revolutionaries"(ie
fascist): do you think they should be told to FUCK OFF? is there a relation
death-fascism you appreciate? What are your political views? You
seem a great fan of Cold Meat Industry- nonethless don't you think the
label is dead now, seeing all the crappy goth/folk/caricatural records
they produce? Slaughter
Prods: when & why did you begin? what are its goal? why only 2 cds?
is it a big part of your life? Performance
art: who are your favuorite performers? why can you describe your live
shows? you said you met Hermann Nitsch: tell us more! Future
project of Atrax Morgue? collaborations? Give
us all the news on Slaughter prod! How
do you wish to be killed
? (and thank you J. for the interview) |

My musical
experiences began at a very young age - listening to some disgusting/exciting
pop-music. My tastes began to change at the age of 13-14, into dark, gothic, punk
and new wave music. After that i became interested in experimental music
because i did not find anything stimulating in the others musical stlyles. The
first impression i had listening to experimental/industrial music was
the total freedom of expression and the continuous shock and improvisation. |

How
would you describe the music of MM to someone whom has yes to hear it? Would
i be right in believing that MM is infact Atrax Morgue under a different
name? If so, why did you choose to release both, "DeathShow"
and "Happybirthdeath" as MM and not as Atrax Morgue? Will
"Happybirthdeath" eventually be re-released on cd? The
track "Music for dead brains" on "DeathShow" is
less "death" fixated than the other tracks. To me it comes
across as setting the scene of mad scientits giving life back to the
dead rather than taking it away. What are your thoughts on my view of
how i see "Music for dead brains"? What
was it that set you off on your obession with death? Have
you met any form of censorship from the autorities with your releases? When
can we expect the next release from MM to be ready for release? |

In
Come
in qualche modo? Quali
Come

Concordi? |
