City

Viareggio is deservely known as the Pearl of the Tyrrhenian, thanks to its beaches of fine golden sand, marinas, vast pine woods, and long boulevards lined with palm trees and oleander bushes.

The city spreads out over the magnificent coast of Versilia. Cause of its barycentric location, Viareggio is easy to reach from both the most important cities of Tuscany.

The extensive dimensions of the sandy shore of Viareggio, its soft and extremely fine sand, and the gentle slope of the seabed are ideal for bathing. The first Baths were opened in 1828: the Nereo and the Dori were the first bathing establishments in Italy. Today, the Baths are completely equipped with everything that a tourist could wish for: swimming pools, bars, restaurants, and different sports facilities.

The city traces its roots back to the first half of the 16th century when it became the only gate to the sea for the Republic of Lucca. The oldest building in Viareggio, known as Torre Matilde, dates back to this time and was built by the Lucchesi in 1541 as a defensive fortification to fight the constant menace of corsair incursions.

Features

In addition to large restaurants found mentioned in the most qualified gastronomic guidebooks, there are also pizzerie and typical trattorie, and numerous food festivals there, there where Viareggio-style cuisine can be enjoyed: fish steals at first, like cacciucco (the famous fish soup).

The Passeggiata is considered the city’s meeting place, whit Piazzone (large square), where the central market is located, integrated within a large pedestrian zone in the centre of the city. Here there are local markets and small crafts market where you can find papier-mâché gift items, made by the float-makers of the Carnival
