Discovering an underground aqueduct of historical interest

Italian text

elcome in the WEB site dedicated to the aqueduct of San Giovanni (Trieste - Italy), known today as aqueduct "Teresiano", in memory of Maria Teresa of Austria, the empress who build it between 1749 and 1751. This work was supplied with "artificial springs", long tunnels that reach underground water. These mines (better known today with the German name "Wassergalerien") are the result of particular mining techniques. Another page describe the phases of construction.

The "Sezione di Speleologia Urbana" of the "Società Adriatica di Speleologia" has studied the historical documents preserved in the local archives and explored the "Wassergalerien". These informations have been collected in the papers of these last years and in the "Regional Archive of Underground Quarries". All these activities are included in the "Theresia Project".
