The Zoot-Suit and Style Warfare
1984 essay by Stuart Cosgrove explores the 1943 "Zoot-Suit Riots" and the "social
and political importance" of the zoot-suit to Mexican-American youths.

  • The study of the relationship between fashion and social action is notoriously underdeveloped, but there is every indication that the zoot-suit riots that erupted in the United States in the summer of 1943 had a profound effect on a whole generation of socially disadvantaged youths

  • It was during his period as a young zoot-suiter that the Chicano union activist Cesar Chavez first came into contact with community politics, and it was through the experiences of participating in zoot-suit riots in Harlem that the young pimp 'Detroit Red' began a political education that transformed him into the Black radical leader Malcolm X

  • There can be no certainty about when, where or why the zoot-suit came into existence, but what is certain is that during the summer months of 1943 'the killer-diller coat' was the uniform of young rioters and the symbol of a moral panic about juvenile delinquency that was to intensify in the post-war period

  • At the height of the Los Angeles riots of June 1943, the New York Times carried a front page article which claimed without reservation that the first zoot-suit had been purchased by a black bus worker, Clyde Duncan, from a tailor's shop in Gainesville, Georgia

Heroes, Hooligans, and The Zoot Suit Riots
Article about the Zoot Suit riots of 1943.

  • Reporting on A Wartime Social Experience: Heroes, Hooligans, and The Zoot Suit Riots Paper presented at the 41st Annual Conference of the Western Social Science Association, Fort Worth, Texas, April 23, 1999

  • Abstract The Zoot Suit Riots occurred in Los Angeles over the course of ten days in June, 1943, as young conscripted American servicemen confronted the so-called 'gamin' dandies, ' young Mexican-Americans whose cultural norms were an affront to the culture of wartime America

  • Reporting on A Wartime Social Experience: Heroes, Hooligans, and The Zoot Suit Riots A lot was happening in the world in the spring of 1943

  • Over the course of ten days in June, tens of thousands of servicemen roamed the streets and sought out confrontation with young civilians in the what has come to be known as The Zoot Suit Riots

  • Although the riots were peaceful by today's standards--and certainly in comparison to the daily reports of foreign war carnage carried in newspapers and on radio all across America--the riots have come to be known as one of the most historic battles of the decade

  • They've even been categorized as 'one of the crimes of the century.' The reason for the significance is simple: The Zoot Suit Riots helped America prepare to vanquish its foreign enemies by first symbolically containing and defeating a perceived 'enemy' at home

    Cherry Poppin' Daddies Steve Perry
Interview about the success of "Zoot Suit Riot," Los Angeles and the band's name.

  • Miserandino Steve talks about how it feels to be the most successful swing band in the country, with the hit, DM) Most of your fans who know you from your hit song, 'Zoot Suit Riot', how many do you think will be thrilled and how many will be disappointed by your newest record? SP) Well, that's a good question

  • Even during the year 'Zoot Suit Riot' came out, we'd throw in two or three songs, just enough that we figured we could get away with...Stuff that we wanted to play ourselves, but during that time it was all the swingsters who'd would show up, and we felt kind of obliged to play that stuff more

  • Even 'Zoot Suit Riot' wasn't pure swing, it was a fusion of rock and swing music, or at least that's how I thought of it

  • DM) Well, speaking of popularity, I recently was thinking about how, since 'Zoot Suit Riot' came out, every time I've been to a wedding or any other sort of party like that, you always hear the band play it

  • DM) Do you think that 'Zoot Suit Riot' will stand the test of 'wedding time' and be played in weddings for years to come? SP) (laughing) That's what you really want to know! I think it will be played a lot, because at least for a while, any time the generations have to meet, like at weddings and church socials, they'll play that song
