As a kart racing game, it's still the best in the world and to top it off, they gave you battle mode (which, in and of itself, was good enough to be its own game)
Mario Kart 64, while not as good, in my opinion, was still a great game
Last year's Game Boy title, Super Circuit, was and still is one of the best games on my Game Boy Advance - a whole new game with the original Super Mario Kart added in
Looking back on the series, Mario Kart: Double Dash (MK:DD) has quite a bit to live up to
For starters, as most people are aware of by now, the thing that sets MK:DD apart from the rest of the series is the fact that there are two riders per kart
All the previous installments have had one driver per kart; MK:DD instead has one driver and one person who rides on the back to throw items, push the kart from the starting line for a boost, and help lean into corners
Most people have assumed, thus far, that different riders will handle karts differently, but that is not what I came to find

It's Mario Kart
For the supposed premier racing gaming that is meant to set the standard for others, Mario Kart comes across as unoriginal and ultimately feels like a bit of let down
The karts handle in a quintessential Mario kart fashion, where the only way to really fly around a corner is to skid round it
If you waggle the thumb stick while skidding you can cause the sparks under your kart to go blue, then when released you will boost out of the turn
Once you have chosen your characters you then pick from a selection of karts, all of which look like they have been depressingly modelled from the Early Learning Centre
Of course it's multiplayer that has always been the selling point with Mario Kart and Double Dash proving no exception
With two characters to a kart there is also a mode that allows you and a friend to team up, with one driving and the other responsible for power ups
I will say this though, aside from this feature there is nothing else in Mario Kart to suggests that it could not have been a much needed launch title as it was with the N64

Indeed such accessibly seems to be at the heart of most of the new additions in Double Dash!!, most notably the fact that each kart sits two characters instead of the usual one, with one driving and one handling the use of power-ups
