San Francisco SPCA: Feral Cat Assistance Program
Outline of the program to assist feral cats in San Francisco.

  • Prior to that, his left ear was surgically "tipped" so that his feral colony's caretakers would know he had already been neutered.

  • In many cities, feral cats proliferate unabated, with no safety net of care.

  • Since 1993, The San Francisco SPCA has been working with feral cat caregivers to control the feral cat population, provide some medical care, keep the cats adequately fed and--when possible--adopt them into loving homes.

  • We provide: Feral Fix Through this program, The SF/SPCA provides vaccinations and spay/neuter surgery for San Francisco feral cats, all at no charge to their caregivers.

  • CAT members work together to humanely trap feral cats, transport them to Feral Fix, provide post-surgery recovery care, and socialize feral kittens before placing them in homes.

  • CAT members also provide expert advice and assistance to novice caregivers in their neighborhoods.

  • Feral cats exist due to the public's failure to adopt, spay/neuter, and its reluctance to make a lifetime commitment to cats in their care.

  • It is time to stop blaming the animals and their caregivers.

  • Feral cat caregivers have been directly responsible for the prevention of hundreds of thousands of cats.

  • The next best thing for homeless feral domestic cats born outdoors is a managed colony where food, water, shelter, and medical care are consistently provided.

    trap, neuter, and return.

  • Thanks to your donations and our generous grants! The Cat Action Team (CAT) of Prince Edward Island (PEI) is an all-volunteer registered charitable organization working to care for and control the feral/stray cat population on the island.

  • To provide long-term after care to neutered feral/stray cats - food, shelter, medical care.

  • With TNR programs, cats are humanely trapped; neutered so that they won't contribute to the growth of the population, and provided with other necessary veterinary care.

  • Colony caregivers then provide them with food and water daily, and monitor their numbers and health.

  • Veterinary care is provided by private veterinary clinics and by volunteer veterinarians and students at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) .

  • Costs for veterinary care at the AVC currently funded by grant from AVC Animal Welfare Centre .

  • The Cat Action Team also operates a Colony Care Program, which goes hand-in-hand with our TNR program.

  • CAT forms partnerships with those citizens who are willing to act as "caregiver" for a group of feral/stray cats, or a "colony".

  • A caregiver agrees to provide the cats with food and water daily, and to monitor the health and numbers of the cats in the colony.

  • In exchange, CAT provides caregivers with supplies of cat food, and with a wooden shelter & straw bedding, if necessary.

  • CAT remains in contact with caregivers to provide assistance as necessary.

    Relocating Feral Cats
Information on the successful moving of feral cat colonies.

  • Unfortunately, feral cat colonies are sometimes found in areas where they cannot remain either for reasons of safety or because a caretaker is simply not available.

  • Nevertheless, with careful planning and selection of the new premises and caretakers, and strict confinement before release, relocation can be successfully undertaken.

  • Essentially, feral cat relocation involves 6 steps: Finding a suitable new home Trapping the cats Veterinary care Transportation to the new home Orientating the cats to their new environment Follow-up contact Finding a Home Find a suitable new home for the cats before trapping them.

  • If such primary sources do not provide the new home, ask for recommendations of individuals who would be reliable caretakers.

  • Screen respondents by asking if they will commit to providing daily feedings, shelter and medical care.

  • Establish an agreement with potential caretakers regarding follow-up contact.

  • Veterinary Care Make arrangements in advance to take the cat (or cats) directly to a veterinarian after trapping.

  • During their 21 day confinement period, the new caretaker must regularly visit the cats to ensure the bonding essential to succesful relocation.

  • Your primary goal is to be available to the caretaker with information that may aid the animals in adapting to their new environment.

  • In some instances, the new caretaker will become part of your support network for future feral cat relocation projects.
