Knowledge Management in the Perseus Digital Library Jeffrey A.. Crane In this paper, we describe the new document delivery and knowledge management tools in the Perseus Digital Library Digital libraries can be an extremely effective method of extending the services of a traditional library by enabling activities such as access to materials outside the physical confines of the library .. The true benefit of a digital library, however, comes not from the replication and enhancement of traditional library functions, but rather in the ability to make possible tasks that would not be possible outside the electronic environment, such as the hypertextual linking of related texts, full text searching of holdings, and the integration of knowledge management, data visualization, and geographic information tools with the texts in the digital library.. To address this challenge, we have developed a generalizable toolset to manage XML and SGML documents of varying DTDs for the Perseus Digital Library.

The project began in 1985 under the direction of, producing heterogeneous collection of materials, textual and visual, on the Archaic and Classical Greek world.. The Perseus Digital Library Project has encoded several thousand documents of early Greek and Latin using SGML/XML markup -- "hundreds of megabytes of SGML texts, with 375, 000 explicit links between resources." It is one of the most elaborate and successful digital library projects ever designed.. "The Perseus digital library is a heterogeneous collection of texts and images pertaining to the Archaic and Classical Greek world, late Republican and early Imperial Rome, the English Renaissance, and 19th Century London.. The digital library also contains more than 30, 000 images, 1000 maps, and a comprehensive catalog of sculpture.

European collaborations are natural for us; while most of the technical research in digital libraries being done in the US is readily applicable to European efforts, the Perseus Digital Library Project is unusual in that, technology aside, its efforts to date have focused on a cultural heritage shared by the US and Europe alike.. And while we have created an integrated digital library environment , we remain focussed on the back-end structures by which the data is organized.. Researchers have applied named entity analysis to collections for years, but this is the first time that such analysis has been applied to a production digital library of historical documents, says Crane.. Support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Science Foundation laid the foundations for this work and support from the Institute for Museum and Library Services made the current named entity analysis work possible.
