DCRP Review: Canon Digital Rebel
. Suddenly those $1000 fixed-lens cameras don't sound as appealing as they did last month.. The Digital Rebel uses the same BP-511/512 batteries as the 10D, PowerShot G3/G5, and several other Canon cameras.. It's well constructed, though, much like Canon's other consumer cameras.. While both cameras support EF lenses, the Rebel also supports EF-S lenses.. It has more in common with the PowerShot cameras than the EOS cameras.. This is one of those cameras where you can really shoot as fast as you can compose (or at least until the buffer fills up).. I used the same lens on both cameras (F3.5-4.5, 24 - 85 mm), and set them at their default settings.

ALso, I can invest in Cannon glass which doesn't change as fast as the cameras.. I thought that digital cameras were a fad much like the Kodak Disc camera and APS film, … fun to play with perhaps but not really capable of serious photography.. Why did you use Manual mode for the exposure on the D70? Also why not just let the cameras go on Auto and see which image is better? . The EOS 20D is designed more for the serious amateur and professional who work their cameras harder and expect them to do more.. It's likely that the difference in image quality will be small, but that also applies to film cameras, where the image captured by a $200 film Rebel T2 is the same as the image captured by a $400 Elan 7N, an $800 EOS-3 or a $1600 EOS-1v, so clearly people don't buy cameras based only on image quality.. It usually takes a while after shipping starts before all backorders are filled and new cameras are available from stock, so if you want one soon, placing a order now is probably a good idea.

. Small image quality differences between cameras, or minor foibles, become the peg on which some people hang their prejudices.. Because of my long familiarity with Canon cameras I really didn't have much trouble.. But, when the inevitable comparisons with cameras like the Canon 20D are done, this is one area where the Rebel XT will be found wanting.. On the 1 Series cameras this works, because selecting a group heading and then an item from one of the group's lists, are performed with separate buttons.. Film cameras have two controls for exposure: aperture and shutter speed.. Digital cameras have a third – the ISO setting.. Get with the program! You're giving us 21st Century cameras with 19th Century controls.. Other Features I haven't the interest in listing the multitude of additional features that cameras like this inevitably have, such as custom white balance bracketing in 1 Mirad increments.. Now, if Canon would just hire a few photographers to take prototype cameras for a walk around the block before committing to some of the more egregious design bloopers that it insists on foisting on us, then they really might become the 800 pound gorilla in the digital camera market that they clearly aspire to be.

. So what you'll read here are my field impressions — how the camera handles, how it compares both to other digital cameras and to film, and simply what the camera is like to actually use.. Differences between these cameras aside, you'd end up seeing many photographers ( probably illogically — but nevertheless ) selling their Canon systems to be able to switch.. Noise (grain) is in my opinion of as much if not more significance, and digital files from cameras like the D30, D60, 1D and 1Ds are clearly superior to film in this regard at 100 ISO, and at higher speeds there's no contest — film loses hands down.

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT (EOS 350D) Review
. The image below shows the Canon Digital Rebel XT compared to several other cameras: As you can see, the Rebel XT is significantly smaller than the EOS 20D.. As you can see neither camera gets it quite right under any of the white balance settings! All Canon cameras seem to bias towards red/yellow for tungsten in both AWB and Tungsten modes.. This is with both cameras using exactly the same lens at the same aperture and the same parameter sets and other settings, and it was independent of metering mode (evaluative, partial etc.).. Whether this difference is intrinsic to the camera metering algorithms and was designed that way by Canon or simply represents sample to sample variation in these two particular cameras, I don't know since I only have one sample of each to test.. Sensitivity isn't high and exposures are long, but I have seen some pretty good examples shot with cameras like the 20D and Digital Rebel.. Both cameras were set to the same parameter set (set 2, all setting "normal") and the same lens was used.
