Digital Recording
. If the sampling rate is lowerthan the frequency we are trying to capture, entire cycles will be missed, andthe decoded result would be too low in frequency and might not resemble theproper waveform at all.. If the sampling rate were exactly the frequency of the input, theresult would be a straight line, because the same spot on the waveform would bemeasured each time.. This can happen even if the sampling rate is twice thefrequency of the input if the input is a sine or similar waveform.. The samplingrate must be greater than twice the frequency measured for accurate results.(The mathematical statement of this is the Nyquist Theorem.) This implies thatif we are dealing with sound, we should sample at least 40, 000 times per second.. 3 Effects of low sample rates The Nyquist rate (twice the frequency of interest) is the lowest allowablesampling rate.. For best results, sampling rates twice or four times this shouldbe used.. Figure 4 shows how the waveform improves as the sampling rate isincreased.
Analog to Digital Conversion: Sampling
. Figure 4.2: Sampling a Continuous Signal There are two factors which determine the accuracy with which the digital sequence of values captures the original continuous signal: the maximum rate at which we sample, and the number of bits used in each sample.. When the sample rate is much lower than the highest frequency in the continuosu signal, a band-pass filter which only allows frequencies in the range actually needed, is usally put before the sampling circuit.
Digital Sampling
DIGITAL SAMPLING TECHNOLOGY by Don Anderson Phoenix Organs America Anyone who has ever listened to good music on a CD can appreciate the fact that sounds of such clarity and realism can be stored on a plastic disk.. Several well-known electronic organ companies do not use real digital sampling.. Never before has sampling technology been taken so far specifically for the church organ.. Catherine's Cathedral, Canada during the sampling session.. The sampling rate on a Phoenix Organ is the same as for CDs.. In fact, many consider sampling to be an art once they have noticed the differing qualities of sound between organ manufacturers.

Evaluation of digital libraries using snowball sampling This article describes how snowball sampling was applied in two different cases to evaluate digital collections.. The first phase of evaluation was conducted using snowball sampling and included inperson interviews.. After completing both NRIS surveys, the question remained whether snowball sampling could successfully be applied through a survey sent out only through email.. The survey of NRIS users was based on a combination of nonrandom stratified and snowball sampling.. Snowball sampling has usually been employed to access hardtoreach populations.. This sampling method solicited a richness and depth from respondents.. The same process of snowball sampling was utilized through embedding the fifth question in the survey.. More important, it was difficult to apply snowball sampling since many participants seemed reluctant to give out another’s email address.. The solicitation of names for potential participants, a key component of snowball sampling, proved to be more difficult with the email survey.

How the Ensoniq Mirage influenced the home digital sampling revolution.
The start of the home digital sampling revolution Without a doubt, if you own a Mirage you have a piece of history.. Before the Mirage, digital sampling was only available to studios and wealthy musicians.. The Ensoniq Mirage was revolutionary and gave the music world a peek into the digital sampling process.. Because of the aforementioned sophistication of sound sampling, Geddy's keyboard rig was now very streamlined.
Social Research Update 38: Tools for Digital Audio Recording
. Digital Audio Digital audio is recorded by sampling a sound wave and assigning each sample a value.. The quality of the audio depends on the sampling frequency and the resolution, that is, the range of values that can be assigned to each sample.. The sampling frequency is significant to the extent it needs to be at least double the highest frequency one wishes to record.. Most of these devices save audio in highly compressed formats, with low sampling frequencies, and limited frequency sensitivity.

. This is the sampling error .. You reduce sampling error by increasing both the sampling rate and the precision.. In the case of CD sound, fidelity is an important goal, so the sampling rate is 44, 100 samples per second and the number of gradations is 65, 536.
Audio Ideas Guide Hi-Fi and Home Theater Equipment Reviews: dCS Sampling Rate Digital Converters
AIG Digital Equipment Reviews dCS Delius and Purcell Sampling Rate Converters Sugg.. The Delius and Purcell do a few numbers together, too, specifically 192 kHz and 24 bits: the latter is a sampling rate converter (see our last issue's look at the Assemblage SRC and DAC and MSB 96K DAC)), which takes any digital signal and either up- or down-converts it, while also altering the bit rate up or down.. For example, noise shaping can be set to 4 values, but that most likely to be used is Auto, which adjusts it to work best with each bit and sampling rate.. Though both upsampling and downsampling are possible, the latter is pretty much a professional use for getting the highest resolution from 96/24 or 192/24 recordings onto CD, while the former is a way of accomplishing sheer digital magic.. However, I should note that real sonic improvements are definitely provided by moving the anti-aliasing filter in a DAC well out of the audio band; since this filtering is at half the sampling rate, it occurs at 48 kHz in a 96-kHz DAC, and at 96 kHz in a 192-kHz DAC.

The purpose of this article is to tell you all you need to know about sound sampling.. Wouldn't you like know how to unleash the potential of this powerful technique? Sampling refers to digital recording and playback: taking a sound and converting it into 1's and 0's.. In practice, sampling is taking a snippet of sound from one source, editing it, and replaying it in a new context.

Fitzgerald, Brian and O'Brien, Damien (2005 ) Digital Sampling and Culture Jamming in a Remix World: What Does the Law Allow? .. Abstract This article looks at the way in which intellectual property law in particular copyright and trademark law deals with the “free culture” practices of digital sampling and culture jamming.. It considers the recent US case on digital sampling, Bridgeport Music Inc v Dimension Films Inc, and its relevance to Australian law, along with the critical issues of ‘substantial part’, moral rights and fair dealing.. The article concludes by calling for greater clarity in the law in relation to the “free culture” practices of sampling and culture jamming in order to sponsor social and creative innovation..
