Digital Physics
DIGITAL PHYSICS Some scientists, such as John Wheeler, who worked with Einstein at Princeton, and Ed Fredkin, are theorizing about the universe in such a way that reality is ultimately reduced to .. Fredkin's theory of Digital Physics says that, "the fundamental particles that make up our world - atoms, electrons, quarks - can be further reduced to bits, just like those that carry information in computers".
The Finite Nature Hypothesis of Edward Fredkin
. The most compelling model for meaningful transformation of one finite set of information to another is the computer, and in particular the computer architecture known as "Cellular Automata." Exploring physics as though it were the product of programming run on a computer requires that we explain how the physics of the natural world can be produced by a computer program.. Two aspects of physics as we know it -- quantum randomness and reversibility -- are shown to be possible within the framework of familiar computer architecture.. The article had noted that many of Fredkin's ideas about physics and computing were acceptable to the scientific community, but his conclusions were not considered to be within the realm of science.. In the world of physics, everything must include the basic space and time of our universe.. Fredkin's hypothesis of Finite Nature sees this restriction on the amount of information needed to provide a full and complete description of any aspect of physics as the prime implication of the assumption that all things are discrete, step-wise, or grainy.
Digital Physics and Religion
DP and Me Digital Physics ("DP") is a suitably neutral scientific term for a breathtaking philosophical concept.. It refers to the hypothesis that all of physics -- which is to say, all of our universe -- can be rendered by a digital computer.. Everything from melting ice in our backyard to black holes in the cosmos should be expressible as a computer program, according to digital physics.. Digital physics arose at the intersection of physics and computer science.. At some point in the development of both physics and computer science we could begin to speak of a convergence.. It was left to an unorthodox scientist whose career straddled both physics and computer science to put two and two together and suggest that there might be a very good reason for this convergence: it might be that the physicists are actually studying some underlying computer program, while the computer scientists are "reverse engineering" that same program.. Chance and a native curiosity had placed Fredkin in a unique position to discover the Rosetta Stone that would connect the seemingly unrelated fields of physics and computer science.

Now Utah high school students are able to use fully digital texts instead of printed textbooks to learn physics.. "My students are motivated to be active, independent learners, " said Douglas Hendricks, physics teacher at the Academy for Math, Engineering, and Science in Salt Lake City.. Students and teachers tell us every day they prefer a digital physics textbook to a print one.. They are more engaging and more efficient to use." One high school student who used a Kinetic Books textbook remarked: "Beyond making physics enjoyable, the digital textbook made concepts a great deal simpler to understand without forfeiting meaning.

The charge to the Group was to make recommendations on important issues in the international aspects of physics communication, especially electronic publication, that are appropriate for IUPAP action.. For details see the IUPAP Working Group on Communications in Physics report.. On this page: digital physics digital physics In, digital physics holds the basic premise that the entire history of our is, that is, the output of a (presumably short) computer program.. A quantum version of digital physics has recently been proposed by Seth Lloyd .. The theory of digital physics is, basically, the following: there exists a program for a universal computer which computes the dynamic evolution of our world.. could lend support to digital physics, in that it assumes space to be quantized.. Criticism The critics - including a majority of professionals who work with - argue, among other things, that: The models of digital physics are incompatible with the existence of continuous symmetries such as, , , , and many others.. Proponents of digital physics, however, reject the very notion of the continuum, and claim that the existing continuous theories are just approximations of a true discrete theory.. Some argue that the models of digital physics violate various postulates of .
