McNamara May 2004 "Sorry, we can't do much with your digital shots" QUICK FIX ROUTINE: The first digital minilab 4x6 print of this runway model looked drab, so I ran the original JPEG file through Photoshop CS's Auto Levels for a slight improvement.. Finally, digital minilabs arrived, automatically dodging and burning, sharpening, and removing color casts from my film photos (for more info, see “The Proof Is In The Prints, ” August 2003).. The reason? Automated digital minilab magic is only for images shot on film! I can hear some digital minilab operators screaming, “What are you talking about? I can make those adjustments!” Sure, but manually, with the help of programs such as Adobe Photoshop.. But as of this moment, no digital minilabs that I've seen can automatically improve images from digital cameras to the level they can with film.. Apparently, the processing brain built into the average digital minilab has been designed exclusively for handling film scans made by the unit's built-in scanner.
