. The JISC and the eScience Core Programme announced today funding of some £1.3m a year for a Digital Curation Centre, based on collaboration between the Universities and the Research Councils.. Working with other practitioners, the Curation Centre will support UK institutions to store, manage and preserve these data to ensure their enhancement and their continuing long-term use.. The Digital Curation centre will provide a much-needed focus for the management and use of research outputs in the UK, ensuring that our research community is given the very best advice and support .” Peter Burnhill (Director, EDINA National Data Centre), seconded part-time as Interim Director: “ My challenge is to act as director during the set-up phase, with a key task to help find my full-time successor, and assisting colleagues over the next eight months.

e-science seminar', Ariadne Issue 30
The Digital Curation: digital archives, libraries and e-science seminar Neil Beagrie and Philip Pothen on the seminar held in London on the 19th October 2001.. In the second session of the day on data curation and the Grid - Professor Tony Hey , Director of the UK e-science programme, began by stating that e-science is about global collaboration in key areas of science and the next generation of infrastructure that will enable it.. The main challenges involved in scientific data curation are a rapidly increasing capability to generate data in many different formats in the physical and life sciences, the increasingly expensive facilities needed to generate this data, the irreplaceability of much of the data, and the increasing need for access to be on a global scale.. The key issue that came up in the second discussion session was the importance of data curation and the need to look at data policies, archival models, and how to incentivize the submission of primary research in digital form with appropriate metadata.

Introduction The conference aimed to raise awareness of key issues in digital curation and to encourage active participation and feedback from the relevant stakeholder communities.. Graham Cameron, Associate Director at EBI, opens the Conference with his Keynote Speech Day 1 Data Curation and the Scientific Record: Opportunities, Challenges and Pitfalls Graham Cameron, Associate Director.. Overview of the Digital Curation Centre Chris Rusbridge, DCC Director Chris Rusbridge outlined the main objectives, membership, establishment and work to date of the DCC.. The importance of participation in the Associates Network was highlighted and a summary of future workshops and the launch of The International Journal of Digital Curation was also presented .. Following lunch, Chris Rusbridge chaired a symposium entitled "What is Digital Curation?" Professor Peter Buneman and Dr David Giaretta gave short presentations designed to provoke discussion from the attendees regarding the topics of the different approaches to data curation and the skills, strategies and partnerships that need to be put in place to ensure effective data curation takes place.

The content will be made up of a mixture of commissioned papers, articles and reports, and also items suggested to us by the digital curation community.
Digital curation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
. Digital curation , broadly interpreted, is about maintaining and adding value to a trusted body of digital information for current and future use.. Digital curation encompasses all of the actions needed to maintain digitised and born-digital objects and data over their entire life-cycle and over time for current and future generations of users.. As an example that digital curation is more than and potentially verry different from digital preservation, consider the curation of emails.. Intrinsically easy to preserve over long period (attachments aside) because of their well-defined structure (RFC2822) and in-built metadata, the issues of curation of emails relate much more to managing their place as corporate records, or their assured destruction, than to their preservation.. Digital curation, then, is a medium to long term process where resources are managed, cleaned and corrected, associated with metadata that shows their context, meaning and value, annotated and discussed, and where appropriate preserved or reliably disposed of.

. Combine this with the deluge of data that is now being generated in digital form, then digital curation activity, including digital preservation, is a new priority.. The Digital Curation Centre (DCC) has been set up to meet these needs, the first of its kind.. But digital curation is not only about preserving and recovering data, it is about communicating with present and future users of the data, and this poses fundamental research problems for computer science.
