The Art and Science of Digital Compositing
- ISSUE 4.9 - DECEMBER 1999 The Art and Science of Digital Compositing book review by Paul Younghusband V ery rarely does one get a book on visual effects that focuses on 2D techniques, and most that do tend to cover a specific software package, such as Photoshop or After Effects.. The Art and Science of Digital Compositing , however, is different; it takes an area of visual effects which is rarely recognised and analyses it piece by piece, going deep into the artistic and scientific techniques used to blend together multiple 2D elements seamlessly to create a believable -- yet fictional -- image.. The first thing to note is that this is not a book of tools, nor is it a book of tutorials -- it is a comprehensive 'manual' on the techniques used in digital compositing today; techniques that can be applied in most compositing packages and systems on the market.. As the title of the book suggests, digital compositing is a science as well as an art.. However Brinkmann looks at these components that make up an image and discusses how to apply them to digital compositing; how to use them to make composites believable.

- An overview of 3D pass types and compositing tips from Jeremy Birn.. - DV Magazine covers video hardware, 3D, compositing, etc.. Book Reviews The Art and Science of Digital Compositing , by Ron Brinkmann, provides very solid coverage of compositing techniques, assembling visual effects for film, and the technical foundations of digital image processing and compositing.. The book is very up-to-date, clearly benefiting from Ron Brinkmann's own professional experience in visual effects production for Hollywood films, as well as his work in developing high-end compositing software.. Brinkmann does not use the book to promote his own well-regarded compositing system (Shake, from www.nothingreal.com), but instead covers different compositing options in a balanced and comprehensive manner.. The book includes behind-the-scenes looks at the compositing of scenes from several film productions, including Speed, Star Trek: Insurrection, Con Air, Independence Day, X-Files: Fight the Future, and The Prince of Egypt, as well as a television commercial and an IMAX production, with a center section of color-printed pages.

But How Does That Create the Finished Scene? With the blue screen edited out, nothing is left but the actor(s) seemingly floating in empty space; using layered compositing, they can then be laid over the background intended for the scene.

digital compositing: Information From Answers.com
On this page: digital compositing digital compositing Digital compositing is the process of assembling multiple images to make a final image, typically for print, or screen display.. More generally, nonlinear compositing can have effects such as "halos" around composited objects, because the influence of the alpha channel is non-linear.. It is possible for a compositing artist to compensate for the effects of compositing in non-linear space.. The most historically significant nonlinear compositing system was the, which operated in a logarithmic color space, which more closely mimics the natural light response of film emulsions (the Cineon system, made by Kodak, is no longer in production).. Due to the limitations of processing speed and memory, compositing artists did not usually have the luxury of having the system make intermediate conversions to linear space for the compositing steps.. Over time, the limitations have become much less significant, and now most compositing is done in a linear color space, even in cases where the source imagery is in a logarithmic color space.
