Lessons In Electric Circuits -- Volume IV (Digital) - Chapter 13
. It is formed of a series of comparators, each one comparing the input signal to a unique reference voltage.. The comparator outputs connect to the inputs of a priority encoder circuit, which then produces a binary output.. As the analog input voltage exceeds the reference voltage at each comparator, the comparator outputs will sequentially saturate to a high state.. This three-bit flash ADC requires eight comparators.. A four-bit version would require 16 comparators.. With each additional output bit, the number of required comparators doubles.. Considering that eight bits is generally considered the minimum necessary for any practical ADC (256 comparators needed!), the flash methodology quickly shows its weakness.. The basic idea is to connect the output of a free-running binary counter to the input of a DAC, then compare the analog output of the DAC with the analog input signal to be digitized and use the comparator's output to tell the counter when to stop counting and reset.

INL/DNL Measurements for High-Speed Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) - Maxim/Dallas
. A digital magnitude comparator connected to the ADC output controls both current sources.. The other input of the magnitude comparator is controlled by a PC, which sweeps it through the 2 N - 1 test codes for an N-bit converter.. If the polarity of feedback around the loop is correct, the magnitude comparator causes the current sources to servo the analog input around a given code transition.. The magnitude comparator controls both rate and direction for these ramps.. One header establishes a connection between the MAX108's primary (or auxiliary) output port and the magnitude comparator's latchable input port (P).. The second header ensures a connection between the servo loop (the magnitude comparator's Q port) and a computer-generated digital reference code.. The fully decoded decision resulting from this comparison is available at the comparator output P > QOUT, and is then passed on to the integrator configurations.. Each comparator result controls the logic input of the switch independently and generates voltage ramps as required to drive succeeding integrator circuits for both inputs of the DUT.
Chapter 2: Pipelined Analog-to-Digital Architecture
. The input signal is first sampled by the Sample/Hold circuit (S/H); during the hold cycle, the comparators make decision whether or not the sampled value is greater or smaller than the reference voltages.. Assuming a N bit A/D converter is desired, the number of comparators required is 2.. Therefore, the offset of the comparator needs to be much less than this value, typically for 10 bit resolution is < 1mV.. Some special circuit techniques are required to reduce the offset of the comparator, i.e.. 2.2.2 2-step Flash Architecture The required large number of low offset comparators was the major problem in flash converters.. shows a block diagram of 2-step flash A/D converter which reduces the comparator count down to .. Although this architecture still requires the low offset comparator with the full resolution of the converter, the number of low offset comparator required is reduced significantly.. With coarse comparators required in the first half of the converter, the total number of comparators is also reduced.
Digital Dharma of Audio A/D Converters
. The heart of any A/D circuit is a comparator.. A comparator is an electronic block whose output is determined by comparing the values of its two inputs.. Thus a comparator gives you a "high output" (which could be defined to be a "1") when the input signal exceeds the reference, or a "low output" (which could be defined to be a "0") when it does not.. A comparator is the key ingredient in the successive approximation technique as shown in Figures 5A & 5B.. In a typical PWM system, the analog input signal is applied to a comparator whose reference voltage is a triangle-shaped waveform whose repetition rate is the sampling frequency.. Pretty amazing stuff from a simple comparator with a triangle waveform reference.. Another way to look at this, is that this simple device actually codes a single bit of information , i.e., a comparator is a 1-bit A/D converter.. Another way to look at the action of the comparator is that the 1-bit information tells the output voltage which direction to go based upon what the input signal is doing.

Raster scan digital display system with digital comparator means - Patent 4706079
. DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION The present invention provides a comparator system for use in a raster scan digital display system for comparing n-bit pel data with n-bit reference data.. The n-bit pel data is received by the comparator as groups of m.times.n bits, where m may be, for example an eight bit byte.. The comparator is operable to effect a comparison on the corresponding n bits in each group of m and to provide an indication of equality or inequality between any one of the n bit groups and the n-bit reference data.. 2 is a logic diagram of a comparator employed in the FIG.
