Future Hi: Glass Bead Games
| June 25, 2004 Glass Bead Games In a comment thread elsewhere, 'Sellitman' mentioned by Charles Cameron about Hermann Hesse's Glass Bead Game.. And, well, there's a lengthy academic treatise about how one might possibly construct a game that is described rather vaguely in the book.. Herman Hesse about a simple version of the game, which was apparently some activity he would engage in while raking leaves in the yard: "I hear music and see men of the past and future.. It's based on his last, and least understood, work, Magister Ludi: The Glass Bead Game.. This book, which earned Hesse the Expense-Paid Brain Ride to Stockholm, is positioned a few decades in the future when human intelligence is enhanced and human culture elevated by a device for thought-processing called The Glass Bead Game.. The figure of Pierre Sogol (ie *logos*) in Rene Daumal's novel *Mount Analog* is clearly a Game Player.. It is a way of weaving together patterns, snippets of knowledge, symbols, music, art - everything "I suddenly realized that in the language, or at any rate in the spirit of the Glass Bead Game, everything actually was all-meaningful, that every symbol and combination of symbols led not hither and yon, not to single examples, experiments, and proofs, but into the center, the mystery and innermost heart of the world, into primal knowledge.
Glass Bead Game
. McCraken Webmagister Ludi and the Glass Bead Game by: Willard Van De Bogart Return to: | Introduction M agister Ludi-the Glass Bead Game, was a novel written in 1943 by the German writer Hermann Hesse who was born in 1877 in Claw, Germany, and died in 1962 in Montagnola, Switzerland.. In the archives of the Glass Bead Game it is written that Joseph Knecht was the Magister Ludi of the Glass Bead Game in a place called Castalia.. Who among you remember Castilia? "Castalia is a symbolic realm where all spiritual values are kept alive and present, specifically through the practices of the Glass Bead Game.. It depicts a future society in which the realm of culture is set apart to pursue its goals in splendid isolation..."May 1969 - Theodore Ziolkowski 50 years later the parallels between the Glass Bead Game and the Internet are very similar.. Capturing a complete description of the Glass Bead Game is not easy.. Here is a sample taken from a letter written by Hesse's character Joseph Knecht: "I suddenly realized that in the language, or at any rate in the spirit of the Glass Bead Game, everything actually was all-meaningful, that every symbol and combination of symbol led not hither and yon, not to single examples, experiments, and proofs, but into the center, the mystery and innermost heart of the world, into primal knowledge.

John Marks Records - Our Sound Samples - Technical Information
. Another option, the one we chose for Music for a Glass Bead Game, is to take a hi-bit digital source, such as from a Nagra D, and use the Pacific Microsonics HDCD box only to re-dither it to 16 bits.. But I cant figure out a scientifically valid way to test that! We were in a bit of a rush to get the Glass Bead Game CD out, and were unsure about whether we could or should use the HDCD mark.

. Posted at 08:57 PM Video Games May Help Stroke Patients [From: Medgadget http://www.medgadget.com/] We find no surprises in this : When stroke victims played virtual reality games in which they imagined they were diving with sharks or snowboarding down a narrow slope, their ability to walk eventually improved, researchers reported in a small study.. So video games are not a complete waste of time.... Personally, I believe that having playing video games has certainly made it much easier for me to learn how to place spinal cord stimulators percutaneously.

Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town Review @ DigitalBackSpin . Very few games have attempted to take a concept that is generally considered manual labor and make a game out of it, but ever since the first Harvest Moon game was released for Super Nintendo back in 1997, the series has had a cult following.. Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town is the latest Harvest Moon game of the portable variety, and also the first to make its way onto Game Boy Advance.. The basic premise of Friends of Mineral Town is of course farming, but with the much higher abilities of Game Boy Advance, a whole slew of other storylines have been thrown in as well.. Now not only do you have to maintain your farm, you have to find a wife, visit the townspeople, and there is even a heap of mini-games scattered about the year which are also very entertaining.. I can’t tell you how many times I have been asked, “You play a farming game?” over the years, and frankly, I don’t blame anyone.. Veterans of the game will not hesitate to point out those people’s complete and utter ignorance.
