The most widely used forms of recordable media are CD-R and CD-RW discs, due to the fact that they hold up to 800MB of data and, with few exceptions, can be played back on almost any CD player (although some first-generation CD players will not read CD-R discs).. The key to this technology is the ability to store up to 1.3GB of data on one disc - nearly twice as much as standard CD media.. DVD-RW is a high-capacity cousin to CD-RW, allowing users to erase and rewrite data up to 1, 000 times per disc (which is capable of holding 4.7GB as well).. DVD-RAM media is different from the other CD/DVD formats in that the disc itself is housed in a plastic casing, making it unusable in non-DVD-RAM drives..
